Edson Pedistal question

I asked this before, but I didn't see it in the list, so I thought I would try again.I have an 81' Hunter 30 with an Edson Pedistal. I need to replace the Transmission linkage cable. I have detached the cable at both ends, but there is a block in the pedistal column that secures both the trans and throttle cable. It is located under the steering gear. There is a screw on the ouside of the pedistal that releases the assembly from the pedistal itself, but I do not knoe how I would get the block back into position to resecure it, once I have the new cable feed through it. Any pointers or suggestions about how to remove and reassemble this block would be appreciated.

Fred:If you pedestal is similar to the Y/S unit (sound very similar) you will need to unscrew the 'Block' to remove the cable housing. This holds the cable housing in place so the cable can move back and forth within the cable sheath.I suppose that this will be a two person ordeal. I did this several years ago and as I remember it was NOT fun. The person on the top or bottom will need to just steady the cable and the other will have to guide it into the block so it can be adjusted and tighted up. You will probably need a good flash light so you can see what is going on in there while you are performing the manuver.Good luck.

not fun, but do-able

I've done it a couple times by myself, so I know you can.Assuming they are all similar (mine is an '81 h37 cutter) first loosen the steering cable. After removing the compass, etc, move the chain up and forward of the sproket. If you have a steering brake, remove it, also, being careful not to drop parts down inside. Now you can lower the cable pair, then pull them both up on one side, making it easy to get them out of that block held by the screw you mention.Putting it back together is just the reverse, and it's just a matter of having patience to get it lined up with the screw hole.Edson will fax or mail you instructions if you call them.Gene GruenderRainbow Chaser

Thanks for your tips. I contacted Edson, and they are sending instructions. They also recommended their line of cables (NW Brand). Does anyone have experience with the NW brand cables? If so, are they better than the cables that West Marine supplies?

When I first called Edson a few years back I asked about buying cables from them. They didn't offer to sell them to me, they told me they were generic and to go to a local store.I guess the marketers have found a new angle. If they sell them, you can bet the're re-labled from some well known source.
