Edson pedistal guard feet installation

Hello all,

One of my projects this spring is the complete rebuild of the 26 year old steering... all cables/ chains, control cables, bearings and break. Also, I am replacing the pedestal guard feet that were plastic and in poor shape. I bought the new feet... nice s/s with a rubber gasket. Question: how do I bed this? I am not excited about the rubber gasket that goes on the cockpit floor and would rather use buytel tape. I also understand that the rubber gaskets fail after time and dont want to deal with removing this again. Edson told me that using the rubber gasket would be just fine.... I agree it will look good but I want never ending water proof. Love to hear the voices of experience.

When I replaced my pedestal with a larger offset type (1-1/4) I had already had a short piece of conduit epoxied through the deck and sticking up about two inches so that if any water did get past the gasket it wouldn't start heading south into my engine room......I added another conduit on the other side with a larger one that the pedestal fit snug right over
