I am attempting to put a GPS on the cross bar of the Edson Capstan on my 1987 30 III and in order to run the cables want to separate the cross bar from the fitting below, but both are stuck on the inverted U stainless steel rods. Any suggestions?

Suggestions??? I have one... I suggest you post a photo of where this capstan is that you want to mount the gps unit to...
its not normal to mount a gps unit on the capstan.
a capstan is a vertical winch (usually large), that the crew would typically use capstsn bars in to gain leverage as they turn it to winch in the anchor, winch heavy cargo while loading the ship... or any other use that a large, fairly fast, high powered winch is needed.
But I suppose one could mount their electronics at any location they want to on their boat... :)

I am not clear on what you are trying to do. I also have 1987 N30 III. My chart plotter is mounted on the Navpod. The bottom of the pedistal (underside) is not easy to access. Mine has 2 small areas to pull cables through. Its not easy.

if you have a edson pedestal then it has a grab rail so go to musings with mainsail and see what he did to have a mount for a chart plotter/gps
