I'm looking for a decent but not-too-expensive boom vang for my Cherubini H27. Any recommendations? A rep at Garhauer pointed me to one of their $250 rigid vangs, which seems just a bit overkill.

Salvage Yard

There must be a marine salvage store in yor area. All you need is a fiddle block on a swivel and a fiddle block with a becket and jam cleat along with some line. Just copy your mainsheet. You can go a little smaller. You will also need a couple of bales, one for the boom and one for your mast. That is the cheapest way to get one. If you can find a small 4 part mainsheet at the salvage yard, you are homefree.

Jeff got it right

We got ours new, but there is lots of good discarded or salvage hardware out there. The West Marine catalog has good descriptions and discussions of line vangs - in the Harken section, I think. We added snap shackles on ours so it doubles as a preventer (attached to the end of the boom, and the toerail) or as a lifting fall to get someone out of the water in rough seas. An advantage of the solid vang is that you can do away with the topping lift. David Lady Lillie

Salvage yard = consignment shop

By referring to a salvage yards, I would assume that the other posters are also referring to Consignment shops. In a city like Annapolis, there must be quite a few.
