ecologically friendly NOISE

I'm really happy that more and more cruisers are being ecologically responsible and using wind generators.
But, (isn't there ALWAYS a but) couldn't those of you who have the NOISY ones (yes, you know who you are) possibly take responsibility for your actions (noise) and not squeeze into the center of a group of us and anchor?
I've had these boats anchor nearby making so much noise that we couldn't converse in a normal voice in OUR cockpit! Or that lovely Caribbean anchorage on a full moon, sitting with my honey in the cockpit listening to the oh so lovely thrum and rattle, NOT! of a cheap wind generator.
I should think these folks would anchor as far away from others as they could, just out of embarrassment!
I've heard all their excuses "I can tell the wind speed to the 1/4 knot now" or "it's the sound of free energy". For you guys it's free energy; to us it's discourteous, aggravating and pretty damn unpleasant.
So how about doing the rest of us a favor (or you just being courteous) and anchor out there to leeward of us, way out there.

................. as all we hear around here is the damned generators from the innumerable gin mills that curse the anchorages around here. And why would anyone POSSIBLY need to run their generator at 03:00 :cussing: ?

Send us a few of your "noisy?" wind generators up here and we'll gladly send you all of the rattling gin mill generators you could ever want.

I understand your frustration!

While they can be considered dangerous at times, how about some music through some headphones/earbuds?

My little iPod shuffle is a little over 1 inch square, and holds about 12 hours of music.

No help for conversation though.

How noisy are those things? I've never heard one. I'd have imagined the sound of an oscillating fan, which wouldn't be bad in my mind.

Sometimes they have a metal scraping metal sound. If it is in good repair, you have to be right on top of them to hear any noise.

My funniest experience with these whirligigs happened a couple years ago when I was on a mooring in Newport (very busy, noisy harbor) running my Panda at around 1900 on a hot night to cool down the boat. My Panda cannot be heard off the boat with the exception of the cooling water splahing. This guy rows over to me and asks me to shut down my generator. I could hardly hear him speak due to the background noise from his whirligig going "..wop-wop-wop-wop.." like an angry little helicopter. I could only imagine that he had grown so accustomed to the sound that his brain canceled it out. These things can be VERY noisy.

BTW, I have an Air-X wind gen- it is the 400W model. It makes a swishing noise that can be heard onboard or on nearby boats. I've never had any complaint from people onboard or neighbors- even when rafted. Maybe they were polite?

There are some Wind gens that are very quiet. The Rutland is one of the quiet ones that I have almost heard.

Actually, I've never complained to anyone about anything. Even when guys start up their gasoline gens at 0700 to make coffee. After all, it is a free country, for now at least.

Oh, I get it now. What I did was politely tell him, which required me to raise my voice to be heard over the "...wop-wop-wop..." , that I would most certainly shut down the generator once the temp in my stateroom was down to 72, which would take about 15 more minutes. Being a gentleman sailor I did not call attention to the sound being made by his whirligig. I was not joking when I said that his sensitivity to the wind generator noise had possibly been dulled over the however long he had the thing on his boat and he actually probably no longer heard it.
