Easy engine swap from Perkins 4-108M to what?

I doubt that anything is going to be a direct replacment except another Perkins. Even the different models of Yanmars over the years are different than the previous model.
They are several good choices out there so get prices on a "complete" job including prop, shaft, strut (if needed), wiring etc etc. Many times the engine/transmission combo will cost about the same as the labor & misc. materials.

Why not find another..
Perkins they are rather long lived bullet proof engines when maintained well and parts availability is also fairly strong. Perhaps you could find a used one and combine the best of both to make a "sort of like new" one?
Doing a complete new engine is expensive. I have a stack of receipts from 2003 that show a grand total of just over 25k for a 44hp Westerbeke with v-drive. Of course everything in the engine bay was replaced so that probably added a lot but even half of that is a lot considering what you paid for the boat..

Nah, not hard to find.
I'm just exploring options. I'll probably rebuild this one m'self, except for the machining, if it's not totaled. I'll definitely be redoing the engine space. It's a nasty, jury rigged mess at the moment. I like my engine spaces clean enough to eat off of as well as organized. This one is not at all. It will be.
