I am loosely planning on heading up the coast from Brunswick, Georgia sometime late March-ish. Any suggestions on where to stop, what not to miss (or what to miss..) would be appreciated. I plan to mostly anchor when between stops , we draw less than 5 feet below and 45 above. Planning to stay in pretty close and stop a lot on the way up, and when my butter hardens turning and coming back south more on the outside. Hoping to at least get as far up as Conn., want to see Mystic from the water. Looking forward to hearing from boats that have made the trip in this time frame. Thanks!

Hi bonsai, were up in Ct and spend most our time in the LI Sound. For me the must sees in the area would be a trip around Shelter Island NY, Coaches Harbor is very nice. Mystic is great nice little historic town to spend an afternoon in. Were partial to the next town, Stonington. This being said if you're in Mystic since you've come all the way from GA, I just wouldn't miss Block Island and Newport.
Good luck..

We LI Sound sailor's can give some tips re your trip through the sound, and Fisher's Is. Sound which is more intimidating on a chart than in reality. But your post seems to be looking for guidance south of here. Please keep us posted if you want info regarding what will be the last part of your journey.

Re: Active Captain

Thanks folks! Shemandr, will do, as I do hope to have time to explore LI this trip. If I don't I plan to next trip for sure. I really appreciate all you guys' input! Gonna be mostly single-handing so am definitiely interested in any "heads-up" situations that routinely occur enroute. Have even thought about reversing the inside/outside plan to give me more time further north. Would mean I would go all the way up outside then tip toe back south instead of vice-versa. Prolly end up tossing a coin...lol! I got from April to late November to play this year.

Its one overnight to Charleston and one overnight to Beaufort NC or if the weather holds you can go straight to Beaufort.
Its about 5 days Beaufort to Norfolk on the ICW.
3 days to run up the Chesapeake and about 2 days down the Delaware Bay to Cape May.
From Cape May you can do one overnight to Sandy Hook or 3 day trips.
You MUST time the tide for the run up the East River into LIS. Likely 3 day trips to run to Ct and Fishers Isl.
Of course this does not account for weather, sightseeing, repairs or provisioning.

We move our Hunter 41 from Hilton Head SC to Stamford CT. We usually follow the coast outside and vary our distance from shore to get the wind we want. Go insde at Moorehead and come back out Norfolk. This year we are thinking about going with the gulf stream, and heading out around Cape Hatteras and around Montauk with a possible stop at Block Island and then West in the Sound. Use a weather router. Be prepared to go out or stay in the ICW based on the weather. It should be enjoyable and relaxing not having a hard time line. Every cove on Long Island Sound has something to offer. If you come through NY harbor and up the East River make sure you time your passage through Hell Gate. Better to go through at 13.9k (our personal best) than at 3.2k.

Thanks gettinthere and uncledom. Even I, a southern boy, have heard of Hell's Gate...lol. Will definitely do as you say. I know the tides and bottom will be different than here, am looking forward to the whole learning adventure with barely containable urge to surge! Will post here when I get started. Will be my first longish trip, other than when we brought my boat here from purchase point, so you know it's gonna get exciting quite a few times!

Bonzai, this will be a terrific experience! I took our Com-Pac 27 up to Maine in 2012, mostly solo, all coastal. My wife wants to go this summer so we plan to shove off in mid-to-late-May, head up Chesapeake Bay and do it all again.

If you come up the ICW through the NC Sounds, I've heard good things about Elizabeth City, at the south end of the Dismal Swamp Canal. Friends recently did the Dismal, had no problems and lots of fun.

On Chesapeake Bay, highlights include: Hampton City Docks; Cape Charles Town Harbor; Fishing Bay or Jackson Creek, Deltaville; Tangier Island; Onancock (Eastern Shore Virginia); then in Maryland, Solomons Is.; Oxford; of course, Annapolis; Rock Hall; Sassafras River; and Chesapeake City on the C&D Canal.

On the Chesapeake, a favorable tide is nice but on Delaware Bay, it's mandatory! You can make Cape May in a day from the C&D (I recommend Utsch's Marina; nice family, reasonable rates; used it coming and going.) If you don't do an overnight, Atlantic City is probably your only choice as a next stop; Manasquan was easy in-and-out (pre-Sandy) if you need it. There's a good anchorage in a cove just around Sandy Hook; or at the east end of the breakwater at Atlantic Highlands. In either case, it's an easy run up the East River--with the tide, of course--and into LI Sound. I stopped at City Island when I got there.

Being a native Rhode Islander, sailing to Block and Newport was special but those both are great stops, no matter where one's from. I love Mystic but want to see Stonington this time. I'm sure I missed some good harbors on LI Sound in '12 so, like you, I'm looking for recommendations for that stretch.

I hope that's helpful and not too much. And maybe we'll see you along the way. Be well!

Bill
