I see where the West Coast has a get together, any one interested in a New England Rendevous for summer 2011?

Dear East Coast Vegamites,
Sid Rosen would be so pleased! He single-handedly held the American Vega
Association together from his home in Florida for years where he compiled,
printed and mailed the Vega newsletter, sold burgees, and various other
hard-to-find Vega bits and pieces, and frequently suggested that Vega owners
get together where ever there was a concentration of boats. Unfortunately, the
first PNW Vega Rendezvous wasn't held until after Sid passed away, but at some
point during each of our rendezvous, someone, usually Chuck Rose who took over
managing the AVA after Sid retired, proposes a toast to Sid. (To see pictures of past PNWVEGAtariangatherings go to the AVA website
)

Good luck!

I'm interested. I'm in the Chesapeake but open to traveling.

Paul and I would be very interested in a New England rendezvous. When we
lived on our boat in St, Petersburg, FL, we organized a Florida Vega get
together which several members, including Sid Rosen, attended. It was a lot
of fun to meet other Vega sailors! We attempted to organize a Maine Vega
gathering many years ago. There was a good deal of interest, but it never
panned out, I think because of the great distances involved this far north.
We certainly would be willing to sail south if we have the time.

Maine Would certainly be a beautiful place to meet and I would be glad
for the trip there. I'm thinking the the Chesapeake bay area or North
Carolina's Albermarel Sound would be more centrally located for most
east coast Vega Owners from Maine to Florida. Since I am located here
in Virginia some might think it' would just be convenient for me. Maybe
so but the truth is I would get cheated out of a nice trip North to a
beautiful place. I suspect though the meet up might be more successful
near here in the middle of the coast??

From a practical standpoint?and I'm certainly happy to be overruled here?perhaps we should consider two (or more?) East Coast rendezvous, at least the first year to kick things off: one for the Northeast Vegas and one for Chesapeake/North Carolina Vegas, and Florida for three? I know I'd love to sail up to New England from Maryland for a rendezvous, but I'm pretty darned certain I won't be able to get away that long. And I imagine the same could be said for quite a few Veganists in New England. Sure would be great to get together, though, even in more geography-specific groups. What does anybody think?

I Think you might be right Jody. I have 2 weeks off at a time, so I could reasonably sail maybe 200 - 300 miles and make it back in time for work (proban\bly a little less actually). I imagine most don't have that kind of time on their hand though.

Perhaps it makes sense to think of a Northeast, Mid coast, and Southern. Of course it would be great if some boats could travel across regions or what ever.....

So far we have what - five or six boats interested?

I don't think there are a lot of boats in the area, but even six boats
would be fun. The trouble is, I would REALLY like to go to Maine. My
wife and I are both elderly ( hope she don't read that! ) but we take
care of a relative that has Alzhimers. Getting away for long periods is
iffy, so like you, it's doubtfull we will get to go at least not in the
summer of 2011. Another year probably?? Doug

Everyone,

Is anyone keeping track of who is where and whether they are willing and able to travel or not? If so, add Tena and me to the list who could find about 1 week's worth of time in the Summer of 2011.

If people want to email me directly at cira2eo@... I will start compiling a list. Please include home port.

I'm beginning to lean toward something more regional, ie: finding a centally located place in New England for us - but I'm open to suggestions.

I believe we've considered a "Chesapeake Section" rendezvous before, maybe a couple years ago. There are plenty of Vegas around - especially if you include North Carolina all the way up to Pennsylvania and Delaware.
However, I'm afraid that we ended up punting because nobody had the time to organize the whole thing - maybe it's true that we East-Coaster are more workaholic or less laid=back than the West-Coasters?
So, what we need is someone to propose a specific spot (somewhere near the Maryland/Virginia line border?) and take the lead "...and they shall come". Maybe Jody can get something started and then write about it in the CB Magazine? ;-)

For New Englanders, It appears that Newburyport Ma, is roughly the geographical center - not neccesarily the demographic center though.

Where abouts were you thinking in the Maryland Virginia area? that would be a cool trek!!

I don't know if west-coasters are more laid back than easterners, maybe. We
hold a really simple rendezvous that doesn't cause anyone much work--somebody
picks a place, contacts the marina and asks them if they can hold onto 10 slips
in the same vicinity of the marina for a specific Friday & Saturday night during
the summer. Then put the word out on this group, and ask Chuck to post it on
the AVA website. Make sure everyone knows they have to contact the marina
themselves by whatever date the marina says, to make a firm reservation. There,
you're done.

The first year you might have 3 boats, but it'll grow. We have people come to
our rendezvous (how do I make that word plural??) without boats, but with an
enduring love of Vegas and Vega owners--so it's nice if the marina is near
hotel/motels and/or camping facilities for the boatless.

My advice? Don't over organize--just provide a venue for bringing nice people
together who share a common interest in a good ole' boat, and good things will
happen.

Good advice, Sheila!

Okay, West Coasters, we'll try to be chill about this.

With that in mind, here is a short list of possible Mid-Atlantic Vega Rendezvous locations (but welcoming Vega-philes from everywhere, of course!) picked entirely at random, except all are within easy reach of restaurants, etc., and all are roughly in the center of the Chesapeake to allow for North Carolina and Pennsylvania Vegas too. Perhaps we can try taking an informal poll on a favorite or two, then we'll take the plunge and pick one out.

I'll defer to local knowledge on this one. Wherever you decide, I would like to start planning a trip down. My available weekends would be July 9-10 or July 16-17. Aug dates would be Aug 6-7 or 13-14.
