Should work just fine. They originally shipped with a 5hp 2-cycle.

You want a long shaft unless you plan on only being out in perfectly calm water :)

It has been my experience it will probably run best in a trash can. My advise run!
You'd be better off with a more dependable motor say a 50 year old British seagull.......If you can find one with the original manual...Then read it thoroughly .... Its a fun read!

unbelieveable!!!!!!

I made a friend yesterday who has a Tor 40 yawl and as I was leaving he said I may like to see this.....I had never heard of a sea gull but that is what it was. wow what a great little motor can't get any simpler unless you paddle.

Did he still have the manual? You've got to read one of their old instruction manuals..:laugh::laugh:This is a picture of what my first outboard motor looked like. Mine had the fiber glass tank. Use my thump to choke it to start it when cold. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-adwm9K77pY

I had a similar Johnson 6hp as a kicker motor on my Boston Whaler when I was growing up in the keys. It was extremely reliable and never gave me a problem. Second pull would fire it up every time and I had that motor for 10 years until I sold it along with the boat. I would not hesitate getting that Johnson if it's been rebuilt and running good.

I also have a British Seagull (Model Forty Plus like the one below) that has been used on 8 different boats now. Can't kill it and the thing will push a barge (not very fast though!). Got it used in the late 80's in a trade and the only problem I've had was a broken throttle cable.

As for measuring.. measure from the inside top of the mounting bracket to the top of the cavitation plate. Short shafts will be somewhere around 15", long shafts will be 20" or more.

Cheers,
Brad

I like that hunter sure is a nice boat
gutsgol.....Thanks....One of my nieghbors commutes from Louisiana, to visit his Tashiba 36. Lots of wood on the deck but he owns with his son a cabinet building/wood working shop back home. BTW.... If anyone is interest my neighbors next to me just informed me they were fixing to upgrade from their H25 to a larger boat. It has a nissan 8hp long shaft on it. Very quiet and dependable motor. They really like hunter. They keep hinting that my boat is just the right size.
Back to your outboard motor. I have 20+ year old nissan 8 hp that I use for the dingy. It is not for sale!:snooty: Then I had a nissan 8hp electric start long shaft on my old Mac26s... great dependable motor.....Then a friend who owned the macgregor dealer here talked me into trading for a tohatsu 25hp electric start long shaft for my m26s. It was just as easy to start it by hand as it was by using the battery. Fantastic motor. Great cruising 5+ knots at near idle. Crank it up and no problem doing and easy 12 + knots.
