I have a good collection of DVD's. It would make sense to install a DVD player on the 460 that we ordered. Has anyone done so. What model? Where? Perhaps there are good reason not to. RCA has a model that is only 15" wide. I am considering this unit. Thank you.

Don't forget a laptop as an option

We do quite well with our Apple G3 laptop that includes a DVD player. We get at least one movie on the weekends per battery charge from this computer that I use during the week at work, and, as a bonus, I can also get some work done on the weekends without complaints from my wife!

Laptop DVD/charts/log book/weatherfax/......

We haven't purchased our on-board computer---yet. I'm sure you all are familiar with my dad's old response to getting one of those "new fangled color tv's" "We'll wait until they get it right and then buy one". We waited for about 10-15 years. Although we don't plan on waiting that long, we will probably wait 'till we are closer to actually moving aboard before we get one, as they are improving at an amazing rate. If you think about it, you can use one for many of the tasks you need to do aboard: e-mail, weather-fax, chart plotter, supply lists, DVD, log book, you can even do the calculations for celestial on one! The uses just keep coming to mind. I've seen DVD aboard on my friend's lap top just as Dave uses his. It works great! Ron (wishing my way to both Christmas and retirement!)

Notebook Computer DVD

I have a notebook computer (Quantex I-1411) with a 4x DVD driive, 128M RAM and a15.1" LCD screen. I use it to watch DVD movies. This notebook computer is also used for navigation software, log book, internet access, Flight Simulator, etc. One negative is that it takes almost two minutes for the DVD player software to load before playing the DVD. With Windows98 multitasking, I can make entries into the logbook (or plan a cruise with navigation software) while watching a DVD. Of course, any software requiring the use of the CD ROM will interfere with the use of the DVD player, so it isn't the perfect multi-tasking solution. But it works for me and it saves space. Then again, on a 460, space is not at such a premium, so that may not be a big factor. Don H.

I had a DVD installed in the hanging locker in the aft stateroom on my 430. Have enjoyed it except when motoring down to Baja. One of my crew gave up watching a movie due to the engine vibration. If you will want to use it while motoring better to mount it as far away from the engine as possible.
