The main on our Legend 37.5 is 13 years old and will be replaced this year. The current Dutchman has two control lines. With someone at the mast helping the sail flake with the correct orientation, the system works fairly well, except at the aft end of the boom. The aft part of the sail falls off the boom requiring considerable effort to obtain an reasonable flake. I know part of the reason for this is the fact the main is old and has lost most of its "memory" (happens to most of us unfortunately), and part is due to the substantial roach on the 37.5 main. I believe a third Dutchman control line would eliminate the fall off on the aft end of the sail and am thinking about having one installed in the new main. My issue is the need for the third Dutchman control line. Will this eliminate the sail fall off at the aft end of the boom or will having a sail with a memory resolve this problem? The foot length is right at the break point where Dutchman recommends a third control line. Other than having another control line to adjust, are there other pitfalls associated with that third line?

Something else to check on with regard to making a new main: "Dutchman™ Sail Flaking System The purchase price of the Dutchman™ System includes a prepaid royalty for a limited license to use our Patent Pending system. Each Dutchman™ installation must have our numbered labels sewn onto both the sail and the sail cover. These tags are used to identify properly licensed systems. An example of what the tags look like is pictured below. Please check your sail and sailcover. If the tags are missing or incorrect, contact us immediately. Dutchman™ is a trademark of Martinus Van Breaths, Inc. The Owners Manual is Copyright 1986 by Martinus Van Breems, Inc., 571 Riverside Avenue, PO Box 2875 Saug. Sta., Westport, Connecticut, 06880, U.S.A., 203-454-0222." Might want to contact them about the lable requirement as well as the third line. When I had a new sail made for our H-35 I specified that the lines be placed in the same location so the old sail cover could be used. Well.... wouldn't you know it - they were off a few inches, just enough that a new sail cover was required. These things are expensive! If you go with a full batten main the slots will be just above or below the battens so the battens can sit on the top of the boom. When the sail is in the hoisted position the Dutchman line will easily rub the batten pocket so there should be some chafe-guard tape there.

Stack Pack

If your sail cover is worn. This is a great time to replace the sail and cover with a Stack Pack from Doyle or Mack Pack or other brands. They include lazy jack lines etc. I replaced a main on my 37 but had a brand new sail cover so I went back with Dutchman. The Dutchman cost about $250 and the Stack Pack would have cost about $500. So if you need a new sail cover as well, think about it. Bill
