The boat I am buying has the Dutchman flaking system - I have no experience with it. I was under the impression that the vertical lines were heavy mono-filament nylon. This boat however has very thin vinyl covered stainless wires, and the vinyl is cracking and breaking. Can I just replace them with heavy "weed-wacker" type nylon lines? If not, where do I buy the correct line. I've looked all over the web for Dutchman's site. Thanks, Derek

Just did the same thing...

On my new (to me) 37.5. The Dutchman was more difficult to rig that I expected. I ordered the line directly from Dutchman. They have 400 and 500 pound test depending on the size of your mast. It wasn't cheap - $15 bucks or so. There are postings on here about using the weed eater type line, but I couldn't find any clear at the home stores around here. Not sure of the line strenth either. As I said, rigging the thing was a bear. My sail has 2 metal grommets at the top that I kept missing, etc., etc. Good luck.

UV protection

I too got replacement line from Dutchman. The line from Dutchman apparently has UV protection which weed eater line does not have. As a result, unprotected line takes a beating and breaks down in a season or two. I'll check for a phone number or address and let you know.

May have to upgrade

When I upgraded my l37 from vinyl to mono, I had to purchase an upgrade kit to connect the mono control lines to the topping lift. It wasn't expensive. I did it at the Newport show and the guy threw in the mono line for free.

Get Rid of it!

My last boat had a Dutchman system on it. I will admit that it makes for a very nice sail flake, but once the plastic guys in the sail began to chafe a hole in my main, I didn't think it was such a good system anymore....
