these have a good write up and seem like they would work well in theory...anyone using them in smaller boats...21ft...do they work well and are relatively out of the way..???

I've had one for twenty years on a 36 ft boat. works well, very simple, a worm screw and friction.

yep..one could be made for sure..but for the price of them if they last its not a bad deal...thanx for the replys

actually i just used the search function and lots of old threads/posts on the boom brake...so i will do that first next time...lol..they do seem to be for larger applications then what i have generally

We really like ours but it's probably overkill for a 21 footer, you should be able to use your mainsheet to control the boom. Watch your wind angle to prevent accidental jibes

i watch the angle pretty good...a couple accidental jibes got me into a good habit...lol..and i am learning a real good feel of the resistance on the rudder...my first mate(my Wife) tends to get a little off course though when a photo op comes up her attention strays from steering...lol..

I got one used and installed it on my 26D. Works great for me on Lake Pyramid, Ca. I had the lines facing the wrong way at first. Had to read the instructions again. Even with it working, I still center the boom when jibing. I like it slow and easy!

The best way to handle the boom on a small boat when jibing is to grab a handfull of mainsheet and pull the boom across as soon as possible... to avoid the slamming action. Regarding your crew not paying attention while steering... welll... what can I say? If they're going to drive..... they must keep their eyes on the road. A boom brake helps minimize one danger... but others remain until the helmsman takes the job a little more seriously.

i hear ya..i was just kidding about the wife...i do grab the boom with a hand and get it over asap to miminize hard shifting...
