Dusty Engine

The engine compartment in my 1989 Catalina 30 is full of rubber-like dust, presumably from the serpentine belt. Last Fall I cleaned the engine and compartment and installed a new belt. After 10-15 hours of engine time, all is dusty again -- and the belt is somewhat loose.

Wondering if normal wear and tear on the belt causes this problem? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions how to prevent? thanks

dust , belt residue

your belt must be tight and propertl aligned or it will slowly cip off dust specs. this is probably what you are seeing.

John: We had the same 2 yrs ago - the bolt hole in the bracket that holds the alternator had enlarged due to vibration and the pulleys were not aligned. I put a sleeve on the bolt and a washer between the bracket and the alt., tightened all and have had no problems since. Fair winds

Thanks for the tips. I suspect the bolt hole in the bracket might be causing the alignment problem. Will check it out...

Could be soot from an exhaust leak. Unwrap the exhaust insulation and have a look. An insurance surveyor told me I had worn belts, but it was in fact from a hole corroded through my exhaust pipe.

2. Exhaust riser, check the connection at the exhaust manifold.

Assuming an M25 engine, would be helpful to tell what engine. Thanx. If it is an M25, the belt is not serpentine, it goes over the crankshaft pulley to the fresh water coolant pump to the alternator and back.

Pencema: Good suggestion -- I'll check the exhaust for leaks. BTW; I see your home port is Annapolis -- we're heading that way next month for the boat show...

Stu: You're right. My engine is a M25XP; the belt turns the alternator and water pump.

John, did you read the link I provided? Check both, but start with the belt. Buy Gates belts. What alternator do you have? More info helps us help you.

No, it shouldn't be fairly common...black dust means there is a problem. :)

I had some black dust last year, and it was a alternator alignment problem. I have an Atomic 4, and in my case the tensioning bracket was on the wrong side of the alternator's mounting hole. A simple swap to the other side (which moved the bracket 1/2") stopped the side loading on the belt.

I agree with Stu...I like Gates belts too...I have a NAPA right up the street & their house brand belts are made by Gates...they simply add two digits in the front of the part number (i.e. I think it is a 25-xxxx).

No more black dust!!! :D

Stu: I checked out the link -- thank you. Not sure of alternator -- other than the manual says its a 51 amp alternator.

I suspect an alignment issue as mentioned in a couple of reader comments. This winter, I plan to disassemble, check the bracket, pulley, etc. Will also replace belt with a Gates.

John, if you have an M25 series engine most likely an M25XP in a 1989 C30, then that alternator is OEM and should (I say should not is) most likely aligned pretty well. Start with a good belt and tighten it properly and drive your boat around before the end of this season. When the old belt is off, get a simple straight edge (a cut down yardstick will do just fine) and check the alignment by placing it on the crankshaft pulley and the alternator pulley and see if they line up. They usually do on the old OEM alternators. If they don't just use a couple of washers on the curved support bracket where it connects to the engine under the thermostat and at the alternator bottom (you won't be able to get anything else in on the upper 2 inch foot). Check to see that your support bracket is straight. Take the belt off and bring it with you to the store or else you'll be driven crazy finding the right length. 3/8 inch belts. When you've dropped the alternator, make sure the nuts on the studs holding the bracket onto the side of the engine are all snug. Also check the integrity of the weld at the upper corner of the bracket itself, at that 45 degree angle gusset at the upper portion of the bracket at the 90 degree turn.

This is a less than one hour job if you have the new belt. Buy two belts, and write down the #s. This is really not a winter job, 'cuz you need to run the engine once you're done or you won't know til next year.

With your symptoms, I would bet more on belt tension than alignment. It's an easier fix, but neither one is rocket science. And you can check out both very easily. Don't assume it's just one of the culprits.

And put the belt on the correct way, ridges IN.
