Dumb Rigging Question....

Hello,Although the angle is very shallow...when I pull my 22 up to a tidal grid to put on some spreader boots...should I also be trying to set the spreaders to bisect or normal the angle of the outer shrouds by means of lashings or no...Thanks in advance....SH.

Spreaders

Sean -The spreaders should bisect the angle of the shroud so the load is centered on the base of the spreader and not trying to slide it. As far as securing the wire to the spreader - it should be secured with wire so that it can't jump out of the the groove on the spreader but so it can slide back and forth. That way when you tighten the rig you don't pull the spreader toward the deck.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

I disagree...

Justin: On the O'Day 22, the spreaders are attached to the mast, with a SS rod through the mast. Both ends of the rod are threaded, and screwed into aluminum plugs in the ends of the spreaders. This mounting is intended to keep the spreaders at a 90 degree angle to the mast... which does make for slightly unequal angles to the shrouds, but that is what was intended by the design. And trying to angle them to bisect the shroud angle, as you suggest, would necessate bending this rod, which would not be good. As for the outer ends of the spreaders... on the O22 (the early ones, at least) there is a screw blocking the exit of the shroud from it's notch, so no wiring is necessary. Rich.
