Dumb Question

This may be a really dumb question, but here goes anyhow. I understand
all the Vega's were made in Europe, so, how did ours here in the US get
here? Did they ship them here via ship, or are all the US Vegas here
because someone sailed them here from Europe? (Or maybe both?) It is
my understanding the my Vega (Originally "Cheers") came via England,
but not sure whether she was sailed here or shipped here. Later her
name was changed to "Freya". (Now "Kemanalea") So, if you know any
history about how Vega's got here, I'd like to know. Also, if anyone
knows more about the history of "Cheers" or "Freya", let me know.

Hi Larry;

you might never believe this, but (nearly) all Vegas here in the USA were crated in airtight containers, launched in Southhampton and towed by 12 mules (like in the 12 mule team bringing that stuff from Death Valley) to New York.

But what really happened: They were crated, but not in airtight containers, and then shipped to the US. Shipping cost weren't high (I used to ship my car from Rotterdam to Jakarta, and another time to Capetown; didn't cost much).

There may be a few that were sailed to the US, but I have no knowledge about that. Anyway- mine (Nr 257) was shipped like I wrote.

Happy sailing... Wilhelm, V-257

Shipping a Vega;

so sorry, I don't think the Vegas were shipped from Southhampton, but rather from Sweden- though I don't know the name of the harbor- I forgot!

Larry,
I was told that most of the Vegas on the west coast were shipped
to the Puget Sound area and launched there as there was a Vega dealer
there. I looked at the skipper lists for the AVA for '90, '94, '97
and '99 but didn't see sail #1493.

Hey Larry,
Will you be at the "Safety at Sea" seminar in Vallejo on April 24?
Your home port, no? (registration deadline 4/18, 707-654-1030)
Should be worthwhile if your thinking of going offshore. If you're
going, bring pictures. Craig

Whoa! My mistake. The correct date is FEBRUARY 24! The year will go
fast enough without me pushing. ;-) Craig
