I will try this question one more time, and I hope I am not wasting anyones time.

Question on mounting Bow Anchor Roller, (AR), on my 1993 26S. Today I removed the overhead access panel, bow access panel, and flotation above and in front of the V-Berth to see if I would be able to get at the bolts that would hold the AR. I found that if I mounted it on the center line off the bow, I would have to cut out two bulkheads to get at the bolts, but if I mounted the AR at an angle to the center line on the starboard or port side in front of the first support leg of the bow stanchion and bow chock, I would be able to get at the bolts easily. Does anyone see a problem with mounting the AR at an angle to the center line off the port or starboard side??

This summer I spent 4 weeks in the San Juans and would put the anchor line in the starboard bow chock. I than ran a line from the port bow chock to the anchor line and pulled the anchor line in line with the center line as if it was coming off the bow. This worked quite well, and I would do the same if the AR was mounted at an angle.

If I have not made myself clear, please ask questions.

Thanks for ideas and comments,

Chuck

BTW, the AR is 19 7/8 inches long like a Windline CR1

Pictures would probably help.

I have seen many sailboats with there rollers off center. I think primarily so they don't have to mess with the forestay chain plate. If you couldtake some picts of the roller in place where you intend to mount it, that would be helpful.. Maybe even some picts of the inside situation.Frank

Hi Cscott,
I mounted a hinged bow roller on the bow of my Mac 26D and it was a simple job.

I mounted it dead centre on the point of the bow.

The big problem to get around is to get it to fit around the front forestay fitting.

What i did was cut into the end of the bow roller right dead centre with a metal cutting disc. Cut in far enough so that when you place the bow roller in position, it will fit neatly allowing the forestay fitting to fit straight in and the bow roller is then ready for anchoring.

To anchor it, i used long heavy gauge stainless screws at least 21/2inch by 1/4inch, and bed it onto a nice thick bed of silicone sealer.
The screws are going into some very thick glasswork and to date, i have had no problems whatsoever with the setup.

others will poo poo the idea of using screws, but the loads are well distributed and i have been anchored up in some very rough conditions and it has performed without a hitch.

It works well for me.

Reply to Paulie17782

Hi Paullie17782,

Thanks for your reply posted below in (( )). It sounds as if the screws did ok for you, but I took some pretty hard bow bounces in 4 foot waves last summer, and would feel better with bolts on the back end of the bow roller. Therefore, I will cut the bulkheads and use bolts.

As for the forestay, I will do what Bill from Ottawa did, and that was to drill a hole in the top side of the anchor roller. I will than attach the forestay to that hole.

Thanks again for your reply, and happy sailing.

September 2008 004.jpgHi marty,
you can see that if you slot the base plate of the hinged roller, it fits back onto the forestay.

I have included a pic of my solution for not having an anchor well, works great and is nice and neat.

I installed a bow roller on my 26S. I was concerned about the attachment of the deck to the hull in this area. The deck is attached to the hull with s/s nuts & bolts along the hull/deck joint except for the area a foot or two back from the bow, they used s/s screws here. I removed the forestay chain plate and now use the bow roller frame instead. I also used a 1"x 1/4" piece of s/s bar stock from the bottom of my bow roller down the stem of the bow. I reinforced the deck and stem with west epoxy and wood. Having the forestay moved over does not have any effect on how the boat sails.
The bow roller makes a big difference in setting out the anchor as well as bringing it in. It is much easier on the back, and easier on the rode on a windy night.
I have never been happy with any of the solutions I've used to store the anchor rode on the bow. I would like to find a nice s/s reel that mounts on the pulpit to store this line on. I have given up trying to buy one and will eventually make one I think.

Bow Anchor Roller

Bob, I really like your solution the best of all I've seen. I've been saving pictures of your setup for some time now and intend to apply your solution to my 26S.

I might make one small change though. I'm thinking I could attach a bail to both sides of the roller assembly, attach the headstay to that, instead of connecting it to one side. The only problem I may have is that the headstay may be too long, but I'm wondering if I could move it just a little forward to take up the slack. What do you think?

Do you think a genoa could be attached to that bail thats far forward on your setup?

Re: Bow Anchor Roller

Doug, yes I think that would work fine, that was my fall back solution if it didn't work on the side of the frame. I've been very pleased with the setup. I thought I might not like to look at it with the forestay off to the side but really it does not look bad and sails well with the slight offset.
good luck, Bob
