Hello all! This may be an odd request, but I figure I'll give it a shot. Next Sunday, September 27, is my one year wedding anniversary. I live near Duluth, MN, and was thinking about taking my wife up the north Shore to see the leaves changing, and have a picnic. Then the idea hit me, see if you can find a boat to do it in! So, I figured I could post on a sailing forum and find someone that would be willing to take us on a day trip on Lake Superior, close to shore. The only charter boats I've seen are for fishing, and that's not really what I'm looking for. So, if there's anyone out there that would be interested in doing this, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking for a freebie, either.

Hey Berg

You might find a shortage of possible skippers.... legally you have to have a captains license to accept payment for passage on a boat.

You'll have much better luck in Bayfield. There are lots of captained charter boats that do 1,3, and 6 hour charters. And it's much prettier. Duluth is actually a pretty crappy place to sail.

Bayfield in the fall.

Just curious why Duluth is a crappy place to sail besides the lake being about 50 degrees all summer? I lived in Two Harbors just north of Duluth for 2 years and sailed with a friend every once in a while and it seemed pretty damn nice to me (although we never capsized or went simming--brrrrr)

To be fair, ANY time you can live near water, its a good place to sail. So if I lived in Duluth, I'd sail there, but probably a smaller race boat.

That being said, Duluth is the weather armpit of Minnesota. It is ALWAYS 10-15 degrees colder there than say Bayfield, and the geography has it hit more often by thunderstorms. And the wind usually blows from the NE, piling cold waves onto what is totally lee shore. If it's blowing hard, there is no place to sail in a protected lee.

And the shoreline is not pretty. Functional and workmanlike yes, but broken-down ore boats, grain elevators and abandoned docks are not my idea of scenic.

And there is NO place to go. No islands, bays, or anchorages for 25+ miles. Every people I know that has a 30+ footer there never spends a night outside of the marina, unless that have gone on a multi-day trip to Silver Bay or the Apostles. They all come back to the marina every night. No place to to go.

Doing a little hijacking....

These are in the Pamlico sound... first shots were taken while at anchor in the south river salt marsh... last one is at Ocracoke.
