Dual Pumps?

I have just begun restoring my new old boat, a 1984 Cat 22, and have a question regarding the design of the bilge. The keel trunk and slot divides the hull in half and it seems that I would need two bilge pumps since water in the bilge cannot get from one side to the other. Is this right, or am I missing something? This is all new to me and I'm feeling my way and don't want to complicate things I don't have to.

Don't complicate things. (your words)

Russ: I have a 1980 C22 & have never had a need for a bilge pump. My boat is in the water for about 5 months every season & is always bone dry. I have a small cover for the cabin top, mainly to keep the bird crap off but the cover extends down & over the companion way. This prevents rain from entering through the weather boards. I guess if you are worried about damaging your hull, you would consider a bilge pump. Regards from Canada.

No bilge pump in my C22. You'd be better off installing the Catalinadirect.com transom scupper kit. That would help alleviate the posibility of your curent scuppers getting clogged and flooding the cockpit and them cabin. If you visit your boat regularly you do not need bilge pumps in a C22 in my opinion. Search the archives. Others disagree.

If you must.

I had one in my boat years ago and never used it and finally I dispensed with it. If it makes you feel better you can put one in the center aft portion of the hull (below the cockpit) and that will provide some fail-safe protection. I agree that putting in the transom scupper kit is a better time/money expenditure. Also, spend some time double checking the through hull points for the cockpit drains and the hose where the keel wire goes through. If either of those things let loose they can sink you, probably faster than most bilge pumps can pump, especially for long. Fair sailing!

Okay, I'm convinced.

I actually like the idea of no pump, if it's not really needed. I'm coming from 11 years of flying and competing in Ultralights, and one thing I learned is to keep it simple. One less system to worry about. Thing is, I notice the catalina isn't really set up for a working bilge pump. The bilge is divided into separate compartments with no waterway between them. I know the plywood crib boards leaked, as well as the windows. I've ordered crib boards and the window seal kit from CD and will be rebedding everything that is mounted thru the deck. I've also ordered the transom scupper kit. We get some torential downpours here in FL. Thanks for the input.
