I'm adding a second battery to my H22 and the question comes up about which master disconnect switch to use. Should it be a standard disconnect or one with "Alternator Field Disconnect" ? I have a Mercury 9HP with electric start and alternator. Thanks, Michael "Mary D"

Alternator field disconnect

A standard 1-2-both-off switch can blow your alternator if you switch the batteries while the motor is running. A switch with an alternator field disconnect cuts the alternator current off. If I was putting in a new one I'd go with the latter.

Why two batteries?

I just bought a 8hp motor with alternator and have a similar situation. . .I was pondering how to get the battery cable from the battery (under the seat in the cabin) to the motor. My wife says buy a second battery . . .and leave the motor battery in the cockpit compartment with the fuel. If you do put in the switching device how will you route the cables? Isn't there a simpler way?

Why 2

I'm no expert, but the idea of a battery in the same compartment with the fuel sounds dangerous to me. Perhaps others can comment. Ron Mehringer H26 Hydro-Therapy

Now I know why !

Boy am I slow . . .no wonder my wife suggested it . . .!
