Dry bowl lever moves by itself

Dear Peggie, I have a Par model 29090. Did a re-build last month and everything has been working fine. But just this past weekend something weird was happening. When switching to "dry bowl", after the first few pumps, the lever jumps back a little and the pump cylinder seems "pressurized" and becomes very hard to push down. I know the tank isn't full because I had just pumped it out the weekend before and only used the head a few times since. Would appreciate any advice. Regards, Roc

A couple of possibilities

And it could be both of them, not just one: an obstruction in the discharge line or a blocked tank vent line can creating the "pressure"...and it sounds like the dry/flush mechanism has failed. How much resistance are you getting when you just stick with 'flush?"

To help you diagnose

Peggie, Thanks for your response. The "pressure" that I feel is only in dry flush after the pump has been plunged a few times. During wet flush, everything is fine, no pressure felt. Switch to dry flush, no problems on the first few strokes, after that, the pressure is felt (like an air pocket in the pump cylinder). About the dry flush mechanism failing, last month I bought the "major service" kit from Par and all the parts in the pump were replaced. Come to think of it, the day I rebuilt the head, this happened once, but since then it hasn't up until now. Do you think this could be just some paper stuck somewhere? Before we left the boat this weekend, I tried it and it did work fine. I guess this has happened intermittent on two occasions. Thanks for your help. Roc

Same problem on my 340

What a coincidence! I was going to write you tonight and then I saw this post. I have exactly the same problem on my 340, not yet a year old. When I push the lever to Dry Bowl it will pump okay a couple of times then jump to the left about 1/4" and act like it is pumping under pressure. If I move the lever back to the right (Dry Bowl) and hold it there it will pump fine. Any advice, Peggy?

This is a very common problem...

...I had both a Sealand and two Jabsco heads on my boats. Experienced this problem exactly as described with all three pumps -- whether brand new or re-built. At this point I've given up and resolved to toggling the valve back to dry after a few strokes. The most difficult thing is to remember to tell guests how to overcome the anoying querk. I'm surprised that Peggie hasn't come across this one before. It happens a lot. Ernie April

Call Par

I have the same problem on my new C-380. Called Par and they said it is a known problem. Something about a "hard spot" and the valve will not seat correctly. They sent, overnight, a new pump assembly. I have not had a chance to install it yet. They are an amazing company. I had the same head on my previous 34, and had a problem after 2 years, and they still replaced the part free. Also a friend of mine, has a 1992 C-34 and, this spring, had a problem with his head. They replaced his part free.

Two Options

I've had the same thing happen on my 96 280 and now my 99 380. Two things I've done. 1. One the back of the dry/wet bowl lever in a small screw, if this loosens it will cause the lever to jum 1/4 inch towards the wet side while your pumping out. If you move the lever back to dry side alls well, but it won't stay there if you pump hard and fast. Try tighening the screw . 2. Pump with right hand while left hand holds the switch to the dry side. Sorry no cure here just temporary fixes that work :) Bob

Died and went to heaven

You won't believe it, but I called Par and explained the problem. The tech service fellow said the problem is the cam assembly. He said he would send me a new cam assembly free of charge! You don't see this kind of service often these days. Regards, Roc

Jabsco replaced a part for my 340

I have the same problem with my lever jumping out of the "Dry Bowl" position. Today, I called Jabsco, the maker of the head in my H340 and they told me that a plastic part was trimmed improperly during the manufacturing process. They will replace the part/assembly at 'No Charge." The part is in the mail. Good service, as well!! Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

It works

Finally installed the new pump assembly that Par/Jabsco sent. It works! No more lever moves by itself. Thank Jabsco.
