Dropping the swing keel on a 22' hunter

I got some great suggestions about the "Catastrophic Leak" posting. Thanks to all. Now another question. How do I drop the swing keel? The boat is on a bunker trailer -- two outer bunkers, two inner bunkers. I've removed the four bolts and the pivot bed. However, on my trailer, the board will not lower down far enough to be removed. Am I overlooking something obvious or is there a trick to this. The only solution I can see it to jack the front of the boat off the trailer another 8" so the keel can be swung free. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't drop it all the way.

If your boat is centered on the trailer and you can get at the four bolts your OK. If not you can drop the center boards with no problems.Just take the front bolt out of the board under the swing board and hit it down with a hammer. That should give you enough room to take the pin out.I spray carburator cleaner on it to clean it up then I sand it. I usally take the nuts off the inside as the 5200 on the outside will hold the bolts from turning. Then I spray the inside before I get under the boat.Once you get everything done I would put two paine washers on both sides of the pin so it can't wobble. Before you jack up the board you'll have to put a short piece on 2x4 between the centerboard and the bunk board or you wont be able to jack it up far enough. I use a cinder block and a bottle jack to jack it up.I also have a 4x4 block of wood that I drilled out on one side about an inch on the other side a little more.I have another bottle jack for that and a long phlips screw driver if a bolt starts turning when i'm putting the nuts back on I put a couple more blocks of wood under the other jack the block of wood with the holes then the screw driver and jack it up just a little and it holds the bolt for me. I would use the biggest paine washer you have room for on the inside and put 5200 on it before you bed it.It usually takes me about three hours to do this it may take you a little longer until you do it a few times. I know someone else asked the same question but I've been pretty busy, sorry. I hope this helps you guys. I've owned my 22 almost 20 years and I think it's a pretty good boat.I don't think there's another 22 with so much room. Anyhow good luck and fair winds. George

Drop Keel Cont . . .

George: I believe I really should "pull" the keel. I have to repair a hole 3" in area around the pivot pin that has been "woobled" out. Also need to inspect the keel housing for damage, and re-attach the line that raises and lowers the keel.

dropping the centerboard

I never pulled mine out all the way, but I did change the line out and painted the inside of the trunk.I pulled the board that the centerboard rest on. Then I jacked the two outside bunkboards as high as they would go.Dropped the two inside ones all the way.I didn't pull the board all the way out, I just changed the line out.I was thinking of beefing that area up around the pin as well. The only think that has been holding me back is, if I glassed in around the pin how would I get the plates to fit the way there suppose to. I was also thinking to put some fiberglass strips on the inside as well. I don't know why they made such an important area so thin. Oh well, Let me know how you make out. Maybe you can give me a few hints. Thanks George

Dropping the keel on my 22

Well I started yesterday. The boat was not centered on the trailer so I had to drop the inside right bunker all the way to remove the bolts. Did that. Managed to drop the keel enough to remove the pin. I have a lot of play in the pin hole and cracks around it. I will have to drop the keel... The only remaining thing in the way (I think) is the trailer axle. I'm working now on raising the trailer on some 6x6 under the frame itself so I can take the axle out. This will give me also the opportunity to clean it out, replaced the bearing and probably replace the all brake system. I'll let you know how I make out...

dropping the board

Hi Eric,I think if you raise the two outside boards you'll be able to pull the centerboard out.It takes a little playing around but I know you can do it. If anything is hung up,it'll be the line that you raise and lower the board with. I use a piece of duct tape and butt a piece of line to it and pull the board and just lay it on the axle and work on it there. As far as the cracks go. I put a piece of copper tubing just big enough for the pin to slid into. Then I used marine tex around the sleeve.Make sure to seal that real good or your board will delaminate. Eric if need be send me an e-mail with your phone number and tell me when it's a good time to call. gmcclusky@gulftel.com I think you may be doing a lot of extra work and the job is hard enough already. If you want to do some extra work and beef that inside up, get some west system and fiber glass and put some layers on the inside. Talk to later and good luck again. George

dropping the board

Eric,if you haven't jacked the outside boards up yet I would put the center bunks back up as a safety precaution until you get the boards up and secured. In case something slips the in side boards will hold it up.Also if you are going to put a new line on the center board you'll have to take the top of the table off.Just the top four screws is all you need to take out. Swing keel

Hi George, Thanx for the help you are providing us. If I have a major question I'll definitly drop you an E-mail. I think removing the axle is easier than raising the boat on the ouside bunkers. I have anyway only 1 inch or 2 left on the bunker posts to be raised. Might not be enough. Also I don't feel confortable playing with these posts. By doing one at the time i would change the uniformity of the weight. It is a heavy boat. Right now I have braces along theses post to lock them in place so the board don't slip down. Safety first. The axle seems so easy to remove. Just two bolts. So I'll try that and let u know. As far as the repair, once I reenforce the inside with fiber laminate and resin, what do I coat it and paint it with. Do you buy your stuff locally or online? Once again thanks a lot for your help.

swing keel

Hi Eric,as far as coating I didn't. Hopfully if it dosn't leak you shouldn't have to coat it, but if you want to I would use Interlux 2000E, I've used this stuff before and it is easy to work with.I buy almost all my stuff from West Marine.I'm glad I could help and thanks for your input. Happy sailing, George

swing keel

Well, I did it. The keel is out. I had to take the axle out and cut a little notch in the keel that I'll reshape later with resin. It drop with no problem. Good thing I dropped it. It was a mess in there. Also the pinhole is worn out. Anybody knows where I can get part for that boat. I need the nylon cylinder that goes in the pin hole of the keel and the pin itself. Thanx

swing keel bushing

Thanx Seth Do you know the exact material that bushing is made of. Is it nylon?

maleron

The bushing is probably the same material that you see used on boats which is maleron. It looks like plastic Please be careful when removing a metal swing keel while on the trailer. Be over safe. I do not recommend this a general practice and suggest always going to a yard and have them lift it off. Crazy Dave Condon
