dropping the 320 salon table

I am trying to figure out how to lower the salon table on a Catalina 320. There is a knob on the pedestal which seems to do nothing but unscrew. The table does not simply press down nor does making any sort of slight rotation cause it to go down. Lifting simply takes the table off the pedestal revealing a 1/4 inch rod with a circlip on it.

Well, that didn't work

I put all my weight (~200#) on it and it didn't budge.I lifted the table off, pulled the circlip and lifted the tube off. It appears to have a pneumatic strut as a support. I put a block of wood over the top and tapped lightly with a rubber mallet. That didn't help. Hit it harder, Nothing. Took a couple of good swings and still nothing.Looks like I need a good strut and replacing it means lifting parts of the sole.
