I have a question. I noticed some cracking on my rudder and decided to drop it for repairs. I took out the pin on the upper bearing, I removed the stop installed to keep it from floating. I loosened the bolts holding the two halfs of the quadrant. I removed the locating bolt in the quadrant. I took off the two hose clamps. The rudder still hadn't dropped. IS it necessary to separate the halves of the packing gland, or will the rudder slip right through the glands? Thanks. Jim B. S/V Leben ist gut 1980 H37C # 143

The packing gland nut needs to be removed.

that's what is still holding it in place. Couldn't you do the repair without the rudder extraction?

Top of rudder needs repair

Thank you. I was trying to do the repair in place, but I noticed some bare fiberglass and cracks on the top of the rudder, and I want to try to seal the top of the rudder post better. Jim B
