need to drop my mast on 1978 24ft; any advice; drop forward or aft? can the outer side stays remain for stability? how many persons needed?

Ok, here you go. I have a 1979 25', that we trailer sail. We always lay the mast down forward over the bow pulpit. That allows us to use the cockpit winches to do the hard work. As far as how many people, we have found that 3 is best but 2 can work. It's just a bit awkward.

Support at the stern
I use an "A" frame to lower the mast on my 272 and have a support secured to the stern life rails that supports the mast when it is lowered or raised. There is a wheel from a boat trailer that is fixed to this support and the mast when lowered sits in the groove of the wheel. When lowering the mast we lower the mast onto this wheel and then release the base on the mast from the step and carry it forward to the pulpit. The top portion of the mast simply rolls along the wheel. All shrouds and backstay remain attached to the boat. Only the forestay is released. We use the lazy jacks to keep the mast in line when raising or lowering the mast by running them to a deck cleat and adjusting them as needed.

A-frame info please
Charlie - I've been thinking about using an A-frame for raising/lowering the mast on my O'Day 27 , which must be more or less the same weight/length as your 272. The smaller boats may be able to get away with using a gin pole, but I thought the A-frame would give more lateral stability for a c. 33 ft mast. If I understand correctly, you can lower the mast without releasing the shrouds ? I would have thought that at least the fore lowers would have to be let go. Can you provide a little more detail as to the length of the A-frame, where it is pivoted (made fast to the deck or ?) Does the A-frame give enough stability to raise/lower the mast when the boat is afloat ? Thanks

just to weigh in on this
just to weigh in on this . pulled the boat out yesterday . i use a small hand winch that i plug into the reciever on my jeep . i use this winch for a few other chores and it works well for mast raising and lowering. it lets you stop any time during lifting or lowering if any thing gets kinky . my mast lays to the stern so i just put the jeep 5 paces in front of the boat (centerd )hook the winch cable to the for stay and have some one run the winch while i walk the mast back to the mast crutch . takes some of the stress out of it. the idea of puting a wheel on the mast crutch is great . i will be adding this to my list of winter sail boat projects also a mast support at the bow i have done my mast with just two people no problems but if you can get three its a walk in the park .
