Drone question

I fly various types of r/c "drones": glow and electric propeller-driven planes, turbine powered jets, and the dastardly quadcopter.

All are "drones." And using my quadcopter to look at my anemometer, or your masthead, NOT for compensation or hire, triggers no FAA "commercial" operating regulations.

Yeah well some people may not like the noise.... Make a law !, some may not like even seeing it in their field of vision...... Make a law ! Some may not hear it or see it but know you fly it.... Hell make a law! Can't people just be happy they are alive and living life to it's fullest, I know I'm out in left field somewhere, but I'm just tired people *****ing and complaining about anything to do with anything, that's what's wrong with this world and I just happened to be on this thread when it hit..............ahh. I'm ok now, just vented and entertained and laughed at myself, sorry for the interruption

Sorry Joe, I disagree. In Canada, you are absolutely allowed to carry any electronic device that you care to, even including infrared and night vision in a "hobby" mode. Simply stated, that means you cannot make any commercial gain from it.
I called Transport Canada prior to dropping a significant sum to equip the new Tarot, and they declined my request for a commercial license, with the direction that if I go down that road, it would be a simple application to get one.
This octocopter is an order of magnitude more powerful than most of the quads out there, and it still has a very limited flight time, and with a GoPro mounted, the reality is that you would have to be closer than 15 feet away to get any kind of closeup on that camera.
For airreal shots, landscapes and sailboats underway, which is the sole purpose of buying it, it will be fine. Anybody wants to litigate over that, bring it on.

Anything can be taken out of context, and it's pretty clear that these things are getting painted with a pretty big brush. We just watched yet another poo poo story on the news. They conveniently neglect to state that it was a Secret Service person flying the DJI at the White House, but make a big stink about getting it banned. How hypocritical.

One assumes you are a member of the AMA. If you fly at a marina, or in vicinity of buildings, or in vicinity of people, then you have violated the AMA safety code and your insurance will be null and void.

Yes I am, turbine waiver holder too. Good point about AMA code, but the subject was about FAA regulatory violations.

Certainly I wouldn't fly a jet, or a big glow or electric plane at a marina. But what about a park flyer? Those get flown near people on a regular basis. How does that affect AMA insurance?

Park flyer or not, if you don't fly IAW the AMA safety code, you will not be covered by the liability insurance. Suggest you contact AMA and confirm for yourself.

I appreciate you looking out for me with the suggestion to contact the AMA. I'll take that under advisement.

Anyway, there's a long-running thread over on RC Universe about drones (i.e. quadcopters). I'm sure you could go there with this. It would be more appropriate there, and they'd probably love to know of another 'drone' threat. No need to debate RC and AMA here.

Oh, I use "VF84Sluggo" on that forum, too. Do you use "KZW" there?

Wait a minute... you're going to buy a drone so you can inspect your mast head? And how often do you do that? Once a year. Can you actually get close enough to the fittings to determine anything, like if there's a bad connection, loose bulb, corrosion....... All of those things you could see with a decent telephoto lens. Or maybe just pay some kid 20 bucks to shinny up the stick with his HD go pro wifi that you can monitor on your phone....

NO... it's the gadget that is appealing... so don't justify its use for anything other than what it is... something to have fun with.

I have no problem with gadgets... I love 'em. I love power tools and electronic stuff.. but any kind of RC device... cars, planes, copters, drones, robots will have limitations to where they are appropriate to operate.

If some guy wants so fly his toy drone around my boat he better keep it moving cause it will be a nice target for my spinning rod. Wouldn't that be a hoot? "Drone on" "Give it more line, he's diving!"

I saw this today. Call the number if you find it. I'd return the quadcopter but keep the GoPro. I hate quadcopters that won't come home.

And no, I'm not that Jimmy.
