I have a very loud "growl" sound when I shift out of either gear into neutral.I'vew had the engine mounts balanced and the shaft aligned. Tech thinks my cutter bearing is bad (after only 60 engine hrs!)Any thoughts?

Stuart, Check the engine idle

If the idle is too low the enging will vibrate and growl as you shift gears. When it did it to me, it scared the hell out of me. Jim S/V Java

Stewart/Jim is correct

Jim is correct check your idle speed first. It should be about 850 rpm's.This is a easy adjustment and most likely is your problem.Check out the below link below and sub catagory service. Good Luck !

Cutlass Bearing

Stuart, You may want to look at the strut. I know of two 356's that had the strut crack near the hull. In one boat, it actually broke off. We are watching mine to make sure that nothing shows up. The symptoms on the one that broke seem similar to what you are describing. My commssioning crew is watching mine to try and evaluate if seeing two is just coincidental or the product of a bad batch of product or symptomatic of the design. The only way to check this in the water is to dive the boat and see if there is any crack showing up at that location. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)
