Lately my boat's engine began hunting : at 800 rpm the motor goes up and down. if I increase the rpm to 2000.it is less significant.First i
I tought a bad shaft aligment was the reason so I disconnect the 2 coupling between the shaft and the transmition and I can raise the rpm to 2800 easily but as soon as i put some charge on the engine, it will begin to go up and down again. Why does this hunting thing happens with some charge and nothing's wrong when in neutral ? is this an alignment issue or fuel adjustment issue ? If my alignment was that bad, could it make the shaft turn slower. I just motored 35 hrs last week and everything was o.k.

I still think that you have an issue with binding in your drive train. If the engine runs fine in neutral / out of gear, then that is the only logical solution to the problem. Perhaps its worth consulting the advice of a professional marine mechanic, as a shaft even slightly out of alignment will cause binding problems. Also, if your engine ran fine before this shaft work, & now it doesn't then reasonable deduction shows that this is the issue. But honestly without seeing a problem first hand, then all anyone does on this forum is guess. I suppose an educated guess is worth more then none at all! Good luck.

you were right , last week end I took the coupling apart to discover that the shaft was damaged by a bad aligment, got it rebuilt and put it back on last Sunday. Now at 2800 rpm it runs smoother than ever before. And that was the cause of the hunting and the vibration while motoring . Thanks again Jrowan
