I recently bought an O'Day 25, and I'm trying to track down information concerning hull construction. I removed the centerboard the other day and water started dripping out of the screw holes on the starboard side. (Centerboard pivots on a plastic/nylon pin, which sits on top of two triangular supports, which sit on top of two stainless steel plates, which are secured to the keel with two screws, each). I'm wondering what the keel is made of and what kind of damage this water might have done. How is the keel secured to the hull? Is it screwed on or is it cast in place? Would there be any wood in there that could have been affected? etc.

the stub keel consists of ballast that has been dumped/poured into a molded fiberglass cavity. The keel is actually part of the hull and is not "attached" like a or full keel is. The weeping from the screw holes might be indicative of saturated fiberglass, as the hull of the Oday 25 was not cored, but made of solid fiberglass.

I also recently bought an O'day 25 , and have got the same problem, complicated by freezing temperatures. I believe I drained most of the water out before freezing. West System fiberglass repairs, talks specifically about this problem (internal ballast keels). I am sure other fiberglass companies deal with it also. I will be fixing mine in the spring. ...is saturated. It looks like someone tried to glass over the port side of the bilge to stop the water from getting inside. Its very rough and raised about an inch or so higher than the starboard side, with some obvious deep blisters. I drilled a small hole into one of the blisters and after getting past the attempted repair, the bit sank and shavings came out crystalized and slightly moist. Suggestions, anyone? This boat will sit on a trailer. The longest strech of time that it will be in the water will be 3 weeks, once a year. Tom, I can't find that article at westsystem. You wouldnt happen to have a link, would you?

that guide. Since I put a hole in the bilge, I deceded to see what was underneath. If nothing else, I would be prepping the surface for a patch. I sanded down the high spot and found a dense, closed-cell foam underneath. It was clean, except for the first 1/8 of an inch. That part was slightly brown. I don't know if this is OEM, because it is so ugly, but if it is, it makes sense to me. I would imagine that this foam is to stabilize the ballast, but probably more importantly, to absorb some of the impact from a hard grounding. I would imagine that if it were solid, a grounding would put some really heavy strain on the hull. Anyone know where I can get some schematics or more information on the construction of an O'Day 25?

I spent the weekend cleaning up the bilge. Apparently, someone tried to fix it once before and didn't do a very good job at it. there was a layer of matting that was only partially saturated with epoxy, topped off with a very light layer (in some parts) of cloth, smothered by a thick layer of epoxy. I was able to wrench off 6" sheets of the really thin stuff with my hands. The lumpy glass in the bilge that covers the foam looks OEM: It is the same thick weave as that which is used to make the rest of the boat. I tapped around on the outside of the keel with the handle of my hammer and found some hollow spots. I've ordered the west booklet and supplies and hope to start the repair in the next couple of months.
