In December 2004, I posted about water weeping out of the keel retainer plate screw holes when I removed the screws. Over the past year, I have worked and worked on it, and it looks like I have fixed it. Here is what I have done: --removed the screws on the keel retainer plates and tucked cotton string/thin rolls of cotton balls into the holes and let them wick water out. Wicks really work well. --pumped a bunch of epoxy with filler into the keel (drill small holes on outside, fill a syringe with epoxy and squeeze it into hull) -- afraid of a "delaminated hull" --bedded the keel retainer screws with lifecaulk. Splashed the boat and water showed up in the bilge. More sealing the screws, more checking for cracks, more checking thruhulls, over and over and over. I finally pulled the centerboard, and put the boat back on the trailer, started really checking the inside. Felt up in the wedge slots, aft of where the centerboard pin rests and found some rough spots. Put a 12" extension on a pneumatic diegrinder and started roughing the spot up with a grinding stone. cut strips of glass and epoxied them in place. Splashed boat and water leakage was reduced greatly. I figure that PO grounded the boat and tried to back off without raising CB, so the CB crushed the fiberglass behind the centerboard pin. Got inspired again, and pulled the CB again. Felt around in the keel, looked and hmmmed and hawwwed, and the only thing that I could see was the log for the centerboard pendant--just a pipe sticking through (barely) the keel. I mixed up a bit of epoxy and filler, and painted around the hole in the keel and the pipe, really working it in. Let it set up half way and using a stick dampened with acetone, pushed and prodded little small balls of epoxy in whatever crack I could find around the pipe and put the centerboard back in. Put it inthe water this weekend and no more water in the bilge!
