I've had the PSS dripless stuffing boxes on for a few years now. They work great. I was wondering if there is any regular maintenance required with them or are they maintenance free. Any thoughts appreciated.
Gary, The only maint I know of would be to maybe move the SS collar to compress the bellows a bit more if the rubber has lost some spring in a few years and check the graphite bearing to see if it has worn down too much after Many years ? I had the same question so I asked the head mechanic at my marina how to "burp" the PSS. He told me that once the boat is splashed, air will remain in the PSS bellows. Simply (easier said) slide back the collar compressing the bellows pushing out the air. I guess what happens is the two ss collars will (might)chatter which in turn may chip the edges and hurt the seal if they are not burped. The mechanic actually showed me a chipped one in his shop. Some corrections to previous posts are needed. There are not 2 SS collars - there is an SS collar and a graphite bearing attached to the bellows which would be the one to chip if hit with a hammer. The purpose of burping at launch time is to release the trapped air so the water can lubricate the mating of the SS and graphite. Yes, water sprays but the natural gripping of the bellows shields you with your own hand so it's Not a big deal. Stan "Christy Leigh" c320 #656
