Hello All, I switched over to dripless packing and now with only about three turns on the stuffing box it gets hot to touch. I removed some of the dripless packing so it wouldn't be so tight in there and still gets hot to touch. with only three turns on it I am reluctant to back it off any further to see if it will run a a lower temperature. I used 5/16 conventional packing with the drippless packing. my shaft is 1 1/4". maybe I need to go down to 1/4" packing ? I don't know how hot it was getting before I changed it. It was running fine, a slow drip when running and no drip when stopped. any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks for your replies. Cap. Jules Miami, FL

Are you using the wax packing or the silicone???
There are also two kinds of stuffing boxes, one that is suposed to drip and one that has a tube that catches sea water and to feeds water to the packing and is therefore dripless. Tell me more.

Drip-Less
Hi Chuck I'm using Drip-Less Moldable Packing mfg by Western Pacific Trading. sold at west marine. you sandwich it in between two rings of conventional packing. My stuffing box is the kind that is suppossed to drip and this Drip-Less is supposed to keep if from dripping without overheating. thanks Jules

Jules This just boggles my mind,. The way I understand, the dripping water is the coolent that keeps the shaft from heating up. So if you eliminate the water drip is the dripless moldable packing the lubricant?. If so then do you have to keep checking it and add new once in awhile? My mind was boggled early this spring when I bought my 222 O'day,, and then I found out there wasn't any bilge pump!! Hee He. Took me a few days to recover from that when I next found out that there is no drain plug either. I look at my bilge and it is so nice and clean almost like the boat was never used. When I got to sailing her I found out how dry the boat is to sail. What little spray I do get just runs out of the self bailing cockpit. A Wonder full Awonder full!!! After fifty years of powerboating I have lost touch with these new sailboats. Likeing what I see. One of my first boats I sailed was a Lyman Cat. Boy did she leak. Took two people to sail her, one to run the sheet and tiller and one to bail her. Jules I don't know what to tell you..

Old Packing
Jules, Are you sure that you got all of the old packing out? When I first tried to switch to the dripless I couldn't get the coupling to rethread. I finally had to pull the shaft so that I could clean out all the old packing. The original owner just keep putting in new packing and never removed the old. Once I cleaned everything up, I followed the directions for the Syntex dripless and all is fine. It barely drips while under way and is dry at the dock. It is just slightly warm to the touch when running. PM

Hi Paul, I had a heck of a time getting the nut back on myself and when I was done the shaft didn't turn freely as it used to so I pulled all the packing out and put a mirror behind stuffing box and I could see the bronze inside the back of the stuffing box so I was sure I had gotten it all out. then I put the packings back in with a much thinner strand of dripless and I still had a heck of a time getting the nut on. then I put the boat in the water and tested it and found it was running hot. About how many turns do you have on the stuffing box ? I can back it off a little to see if that helps but not much more as it's only got about three turns on it. Thanks for you input. I have an Oday 39, what are you sailing ??

Hey Jules, Ursa Minor is a 1985 O'day 28. I don't know how many threads I have engaged, but it's alot more than 3. Probably about half of the stuffing box assembly. I did just as recommended in the instructions with one ring of regular packing sandwiching the Syntex. I used a little less than 1/2 of what came in the package and everything went back together very nicely. Great results. Is it possible that the stuffing box is out of alignment with your shaft? Maybe you need to loosen the clamps on the hose/box joint and wiggle the box around a little to help it ride on the shaft easier. (did I just write that? only boat talk; really!!) The Syntex works so I'm thinking there is something else that you need to look at. Good Luck, PM
