Have a Spurs Dripless packing on my '94 30T...bought the boat 3 years ago and have always had some drips and black goo oozing (splattering when running) out between the fixed black collar and ss rotating shaft collar...called Spurs a while ago and was advised to clean out the space with #200 wet sandpaper...didn't do anything. Alignment is fine.
The boat is on the hard for the winter...any clues on a solution short of new gear??

Spurs dripless stuffing box?

Did Spurs use to market their own design? Because now I see that they just remarket the PSS shaft seal. And I have never heard that complaint of the PSS.

Or is it a real PSS seal? Could the adjustment be such that there is too much pressure on the seal? This could wear harder on the graphite block which would give you the result that you see. Or maybe the fixed graphite collar is faulty.

Not Right

I have a PSS on my 30T and no drips. Something is wrong with yours. This is not an area to mess with - I would replace it.

The brand is PSS....I will have a good look at the graphite now that it is out of the water and if some defect apparant...i guess replacement is the wise move...

The unit need not be replaced in whole. Service parts are available. Do you know how many hours are on it? I replaced my bellows at ten years and 1000 hours, per their recommendation, but the old one looked in perfect shape. It sounds to me like the rubbing surfaces got nicked somehow, most likely the S/S portion. Contact their tech support to discuss it. Good luck! Better bookmark the post regarding removing the coupling; in your case its timely!
