I have an 85 28.5 and have decided to replace the packing system with a dripless system to remove the constant water flow under my cabin floor. I'm going to do this before I replace the sole. Has anyone done this? (of course you have!) Any suggestions, recommendations of specific brands and steps to take. My season ends in a week so as soon as Harmony is on dry ground I want to start. Thanks

DRipless?

You may want to consider the new packing materials instead of the Driples shaft seal which runs big bucks. By the way when trying to remove my old packing,I discovered a flat plastic washer between the nut and the packing. Up until then I never heard of such a thing.

they work great

I had the same problem and it's worth every penny you pay for it!! They come with good instructions, it's just a tight area to work in. Check to see how rusty the bolts are on the coupler plate? They need to come off so you can slide the shaft back to get the last drop on. They should be standard equipment from the factory vs. those cheap stuffing boxes!!! good luck, i'm sure you'll enjoy it when your done smooth sailing "maverick"

I agree with Bill

I just recently repacked my stuffing box with the new teflon impregnated flax material. With some adjustment of the locking nut, there are no drips and everything works fine (the box runs cool and all) and my bilge is bone dry. The new flax material costed me less than $10 from West Marine.

dripless install

Replaced mine 2 years ago with a PSS and its been great. I wrote detailed replacement instructions for the 28.5 I've e-mailed to a number of owners. Sent me an e-mail and I'll send them if you decide to go with the PSS. tom.lukas@state.me.us tom

lasdrop

Each packing system has its pro's and con's but I prefer a dripless system. I have a Lasdrop dripless seal on my H33 and for many years there has not been a drop of H20 in the bilge and nearly zero maintance. I've done some research on both the PSS and Lasdrop system and when the time comes to replace my Lasdrop I'm still not sure which I'll use but I will certainly use a dripless system, they are fantastic! I've noticed many people are fanatic about one system or another, I figure there are different systems for different boats and people. As long as it is installed and maintained well both will serve well.

Three can't be wrong

recently placed the new dripless packing (teflon coated)in my 29.5. works great, costs little, and won't be a potentially expensive repair in the future
