I want to add a electric out let in the cockpit on my catalina 22. I have read that I will need to tape the area to protect the edge of the one inch hole I will be drilling. My question is what is the best type of drill bit to use, a hole cutter a spade bit with a scoring edge or what? Also from which direction will give me the best results. Drilling from the inside out or out side in?

hmmm if i were as ambitious...

I guess I would use a Hole saw and drill from the outside in... usually the side ur drilling will look much better than the other side. Also, let the drill do the work. I see so many people put so much pressure on the drill motor as they are drilling to get the hole drilled faster. Its only fiberglass, so take it easy, and just take ur time. You might try puttin masking tape on both sides. it might help with making the hole cleaner when your done drilling good luck.........

dust collection

Chip you might want to tape a paper or plastic bag over the inside area where the hole saw will come through that way the bag will collect the fiberglass dust when the hole saw drills through. - Cause fiberglass dust is really itchy :) good luck

both

when i do this, (and i have drilled holes up to 6" with a hole saw), i do half from one direction, then the other half from the opposite direction. it helps to move the drill motor in a slight circular motion as you drill, this lets the pressure point of the hole saw float a bit. depending on how thick you are drilling, you may have to remove the holesaw every few seconds and clear the powder from the teeth (usually just flick it off with your fingers, but it will be hot....don't linger). get a piece of wood to practice with first.
