Dried Tape Glue Residue From Hell

No matter what chemical I try that damn tape glue won't come off. I'm almost at the point of just sanding it off. (End of my aluminum boom)

Got any suggestions on what new chemistry will work?

Like from Duct Tape?? If it has seen a few days of sunlight it is a real mess to get off.. I have found lamp oil or kerosene or (very carefully) gasoline.. will soften it .. If you can put a paper towel with some kerosene or gasoline on it over the glue .. put a plastic bag over and secure (not with tape) for a half hour or so, you should be able to get it to wipe off with a rag and some more whatever was on the rag soaking..
I just had to do that with some tape residue from a little taping for Hurricane Isaac..

3M Citrus Cleaner. Should work. Acetone works well too but is nasty dangerous. Sometimes WD40 works for me too but then there is another chemical to clean up.

Did you try acetone? I've used it many times getting tape residue off. You may need to scrub hard but it goo's it up enough to take off.

I know this sounds way out but I use a small amounts of peanut butter (smooth) and it removes residue with no problem. Just rub it in with you fingers and wipe it off.

go to wally world (Wallmart) to the automotive dept and get a spray can of 3M adheasive remover...spray it on a rag and a little on the glue then just keep wipeing it will come off ...i used it on gorillia tap residuals on my friends boat after he had covered up a leaking deck hatch with tape and a plastic garbage bag ...it was on there for about 7 weeks before i could get to it to do the repair...it worked great and didnt effect the finish one bit....hope this helps...

I use acetone

I have found that there is almost nothing that acetone won't get rid of. Kind of hard on the hands, and you don't want to breathe much of it. But outside on the boom shouldn't be a problem. But more than likely acetone will cut it.

i had some heavy duty stevedore 5 inch wide duct tape on a few places on the fiberglass hull and also on the aluminum mast

i tried acetone

i tired vegetable oil

i eventually sprayed some WD40 on a green scrounge pad and scrubbed it off. The aluminum mast was easy, the fiberglass required some elbow grease.

Don't use acetone w/o nitrile gloves as the acetone penetrates your skin and goes into you, which is a bad thing.

This is a tough one, even when unwrapping the masts and booms from factory we have this issue.

If you have used Acetone and it doesn't come off then i would assume that it has been in the sun for a while and the aluminium as a 'soft' material absorbs some of the glue, tough as it is the only was i have removed this have been:

1 - Acetone
2 - WD40
3 - Lemon Juice
4 - Heavy Duty Hull Cleaner

With 4 you then have to polish up the area again as you will be striping away the normal protection of the metal...

Is the surface still sticky? If so then should be good, if not then certainly has been absorbed.

Acetone had gotten a bad rap in the past but it really is not that bad.. Ya don't want to drink it or bathe in it but it is not the beast that it was once thought to be:

Note that in 1995, Acetone was taken off the EPA list of toxic chemicals..
I am not saying to treat it like water, I am saying that it is not as bad as some folks think..
I have found that it does not remove some tape residue as well as kerosene or Goo Gone..

And you do realize that thousands of women put Acetone on their hands every week? Removing fingernail polish- it's the active ingredient.

You might try MEK. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowes. It's a good solvent

All of the above mentioned solvents will work .... the longer the goo has been in contact, the longer SOAK time required.
As one poster already mentioned, soak a paper towel with the solvent, apply to the surface and cover with saran, etc. plastic wrap ... and wait!

BTW most of these adhesives are soluble in mineral oil .... takes time for the solubility.
