if you are referring to: Within the City of Punta Gorda, living aboard boats and other watercraft shall be permitted only in marinas approved for such purpose by the Zoning and Land Development provisions of this code (see section 26-7).

I'm pretty sure that spending the night on your boat versus living aboard is very different. Especially when the Admiral assigns you bunk space onboard your ship that evening.

Trust us, if your neighbors turn you in, you will see PGPD and you will be guilty of a code violation.

I use my boat as the man cave. If the wife gets mad I say I am sleeping on the boat. I look for arguments!

We are still looking for a place to relocate. Pensacola and Milton looked promising until I looked at Citiy-data.com and read the sex offender rates:

According to our research there were 187 registered sex offenders living in Milton, Florida in July 2011
The ratio of number of residents in Milton to the number of sex offenders is 46 to 1.

Could this be wrong? Pensacola isn't any better. Kinda scarey when you have a 6 yr old, but It just takes one I suppose.

Check Punta Gorda. We have a very agressive policy on sex offenders that others municipalities come here to study.

Well, I can't speak to the issue other than to say that I've lived in this area over 20 years and don't recall seeing anything about sexual predators runnig amuck. I think one thing to keep in mind is how broadly the term sex offender is being defined now. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of your registered sex offenders are not serial child rapists, but rather people like the 19 year old who had consensual relations with a 16 year old whose parents then called the police or the high school football player who had a few illegal drinks and got caught peeing on a lamppost (indecent exposure). Anyway, it would seem a good idea if you're seriously considering uprooting your life and relocating to another state to first take a few weeks and visit the areas you are considering.

Amen to that! The whole 'sexual offender' debacle has gone a bit overboard in recent years. If that is your primary concern for relocation, then I suggest you purchase a nice island off the coast of Nicaragua and start your own community :)

Cheers,

Why yes, my family's safety is the most important thing in my life! I'm glad I live in a country where I am free to choose my family over things like money, sailing grounds, entertainment and who lives next door. I was a corrections officer and have personally dealt with sex offenders. If I were allergic to bees, I wouldn't move into a hive.

I do have to admit that it's probably the first time I've ever heard anyone extol the virtues of their community by pointing out the quality of their sexual predator monitoring program. Somehow I don't think I ever see that one making it into the Chamber of Commerce promotional package. Interesting times.

Please don't think I'm knocking your town. I do plan to visit and check things out. We visited the last place we were interested in at least for 5 weekend trips but by the time we decided the job was filled.

No worries. There are some scary goings on in this town at times, like this item from this past weekend:

Probably makes people think we're nuts. Anyway, you did get me wondering about the whole sexual offender thing, and the amateur sociologist in me believes that human nature being what it is, and fairly universal, I'd be willing to bet that there is probably a pretty even distribution of people prone to committing sex offenses, and any identified differences in proportion is probably more related to enforcement and record keeping. I'd really have a hard time believeing that there's a significant difference in the percentage of the population that's alcoholic, addicted to something, violent in some way or prone to commiting sex offenses in one geographic area compared to another. I mean, what would be the causative effect for any non-random distribution?
