Bermuda

I'm with the Muskrat-literally. He forgot that the 33 foot Pearson needs a few repairs before Bermuda. But that is the next goal for us. Both of us have wanted to do some blue water sailing, and never had the boat or the crew to do it. Now we have the boat, and each other. Bon voyage !!!

Wow; crusin spirit alive and well on this board!!

With 25 % of all responders dreaming of bluewater cruising and nearly 2/3 planning long trips manufacturers of production vessels better start paying attention to this potential market for better sea berths, larger anchor lockers, real toerails, strong handholds, and so on and so forth. An important question is, of course, whether the responders were somewhat representative of the total group of cuisers frequenting this board or whether the responses came primarily from a subgroup already interested in cruising. Even then, however, there were several hundred potential or actual cruisers who responded. If manufacturers could be made to believe that many if not most of these potential cruisers would readily pay a bit more for their vessels in order to get a more seaworthy vessel without months, if not years, of back- and/or wallet-busting upgrades, perhaps some of the missing features might be provided as an option. I am not much of a businessman and perhaps my own preferences are not representative for most (potential) cruisers on this board. However, if Hunter Marine -- for example -- were to offer "offshore versions" of some of their larger models I would think that the response could well be surprisingly strong. Flying Dutchman PS The Beneteau results are puzzling in their outlier behavior for nearly all categories. Could it be that only 30 or so Beneteau sailors responded thus far?

Great Cruising Lakes

We are planning for extended cruising on the Great Lakes in our Cherubini h27. In 03 we take a couple of weeks in the east end of Lake Erie. Then we will move our home port to Sandusky in the west end of the lake. (We are starting second careers in Columbus, with more time off for cruising, but farther from the Lake.) We will charter in the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior in August. The 04 plan is a one month cruise to the North Channel and back. Superior and Lake Ontario/Thousand Islands, Georgian Bay, and Lake Michigan will take a couple of months each. Meanwhile, we are taking one week charters to scout these locations, and check out the faraway places. We visited the Virgins, and North Channel in the past two years. The Admiral and I are happy in the h27 for 2 week cruises so far, so we plan no change in the boat, unless taking others (Grandsons for instance) becomes a priority. David Lady Lillie

Hafa Adai

Hafa Adai I lived in Guam and Saipan also. Do I know you? I lived Merizo from 1972-78 and Saipan 78-86.

Ghost Dam

Hi Simon, I just bought a Tanzer 7.5 and plan on keeping it at Ghost Dam. Do you still have a Tanzer 22 there? Any advice for me about Ghost Dam as a home port? Bruce

Inside Passage

How much time do you predict you'll need for the round trip? Are there lots of places along the way to get supplies? As I have a trailerable 7.5 Tanzer shoal keel, I could imagine doing this trip someday and will be very interested to hear how yours works out. Cheers Bruce

In search of Avalon

Camalot long gone. The legendary island home of King Aurthurs tomb has a mystic and pleasant name. Avalon evokes feelings that the better and more noble side of man is just waiting, somewhere, to be discovered and awakened. Plus they have hotels there (with showers) and restaurants and other twentieth century comforts. God willing, Mirage and her crew will voyage from San Francisco to Catalina Island some time in June/July of this year. Stopping on the way down only due to weather considerations or crew fatigue, we will brave the Big Sur coast line and sneek past the dred Pt. Conception. Hopefully some gentle weather will allow for opportunistic exploration of Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands. Then on to Avalon for rest, regrouping, and red wine with friends. The obligatory "no shit there we were" stories and reliving of past glories. With any luck we will be motoring backup in calm clear weather for the 4th. (or anchored off the board walk in Santa Cruz)

Hey, Mark

Name of boat, description and type? We'll look for you! Definitely, go to Cat Harbor if you think you'll be near Catalina on the 4th. It is an excellent anchorage and the moorings will be sold out by the 2nd. If you do get a mooring on or before, you are probably fine in any of the other coves. Look forward to seeing you around. Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club has a race over the 4th to San Diego and has a return cruise to Isthmus Harbor the following weekend. Consider yourself and crew our guests if you are there. Thanks Rick:)

Mirage is a Catalina 36. Our current plan is to leave San Francisco on or around June 18th and be back by July 9th. My theory on cruising is to make wide general plans and adjust as weather, crew fatigue, and disaster factor in. We will be in Avalon Bay some time in late June. An excuse to cruise around to Catalina Harbor would be great! However, we will probably be harbor hopping our way back up the coast by July 2cond. Allowing for hiding in Cojo Anchorage, Port San Louis/Morro Bay, or Monterey Harbor waiting for "weather windows" as needed. (2wiebers@attbi.com)

DREAMING OF THE INTERCOASTAL TO FLORIDA

Years ago, as a young man, I made that trip from Va. Beach to Ft. Lauderdale. Make your sale on the outside at least until you get to Fl. Plan for 24 to 48 hour sales. You wont regret it.

Get plenty of experience

before you set out to see the world. Our little Pearson 26 is perfect for this little corner of Chesapeake Bay but any more than that requires a lot more boat. Most of the long range cruisers I see in Mill Creek are at least 40 feet and many 50+. After many years at sea compliments of the USN, pulled some folks out that looked more like dead rats, resuplied some who ran out of water and food mid-ocean, and heard some very scared maydays. Saw 25-30 foot seas in the South China Sea and took blue water over the bow of a 700 foot man-o-war. Someday I too want to cruise the Caribean and will but with a lot more hull under me. For now the Bay and all it's beauty is enough for me.
