Dream Interior and Updates

If you had a Hunter 23 that was 100% gutted and was starting from scratch, what updates would you install? The interior layout from the photo-copy of the brochure Hunter sent me showed sleeping for three and I would like to have room for four and a head with a door. A modified version of the Macgregor 26 interior looked decent and not that hard to build (use the rest of the back bunk for storage). Where would a good place for the stereo be (small one) and would wiring upgrades be a consideration. Interior lighting looks sparse too, any ideas? How workable is the stock stove (can't live without coffee!)? Cabela's sells a butane camping stove almost the same size. Solar panel,... Let's hear it people!

Be Careful of Butane

Randy, The original Origo stove was an alcohol burner. Any fumes are lighter than air and go right out since the boat is far from airtight. Butane, Propane, etc. are heavier and air and will settle to the bottom of the boat. I keep all gasoline, propane, butane, etc., on deck where the gas can goes to prevent any fumes from getting inside the hull. The alcohol burner doesn't put out the heat that gas does, but its safer below. My H23 is supposed to sleep 5: 2 in the v-berth, two crosswise, and one in the quarter-berth under the starboard cockpit seat. The floorboards go into vertical grooves and the seatbacks set across them to make a mattress across. I think that you could actually sleep 4 adults or two adults and three kids. The porta-pot sits just forward of the mast support. If you hang a curtain, yo have some small amount of privacy. With the small amount of headroom, I can't imaine how you will be able to have an enclosed head or porta-pot. Let us know if you want some pictures or dimensions. Regards, Jerry

do you need a stove?

There are 12-volt coffee machines that work. If you use a stove alot, then I would put a new one in, but with all the ways to heat up things, a gas stove is more trouble than what it is worth. It is my understanding alot of boats are lost because of a stove fire.

Were structural bulkheads removed? If so, they need to go back where they were.

THANKS!

Thanks for the advice guys. To answer your questions, the boat has a little rotten plywood in the bottom where the structures used to be and that is it, yes I need a stove due to worrying about battery drain (unless I don't have to worry), and I will nix the idea of butane (thanks!). When I contacted Hunter, they told me they had no demensions for the interior. It was built free-hand until they got it the way they wanted it and used that for a jig. Didn't seem too excited about me bothering them... They did send me a xerox copy of an old brochure that showed a general layout. Other than that, I have no dimensions, don't know what an interior looks like, nor how the interior works (folds into beds, how the table looked, what-ever...) All my ideas have come from other manufacturers websites, a bad photo copy, my imagination and the general layout of the boat. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! If you have interior pictures, please send to boofinbrier@aol.com. Thanks, Randy

H23 Regatta coming to Indian Lake...

...and that may be a good time to get a hands-on look at how other H23's are laid out or equipped. It's a bit of a drive for you (2 hours?), but may well be worth it to exchange ideas with other H23 owners. Check the Hunter Owners Rendezvous link from the main page (or the one below) for more information. --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio' (Formerly a H23 owner!)

To quote Mike Epp...

"Indian Lake is NORTHWEST of Columbus, Ohio by about an hour on Rt 33. It's about 2.5 hours as the boat trailer flies from Indianapolis and Cincinnati and Detroit." Have fun, --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'
