I recently purchased an O'Day Daysailor II, and I noticed that the previous owner installed the transom drain plug on the inside of the cockpit. However, when I'm out taking sailing lessons, the sailboats (Flying Scots) all mount theirs on the outside of the transom.

I'm guessing that I should follow suit, but I'm not certain. Any thoughts?

Thank you!

We had a Daysailor II as well and I recall that our drain plus location was all-important for the bailer to work....I will check with some people I know here in Wichita that sail O'day
Daysailors, but there is also an active Day Sailor owner's group that you should be able to
contact by searching on Google...good luck, Pat

I just remembered that on our DS, the plug was on the inside of the boat...that insured there was no chance of losing it into the big blue deep.....the plug has a specific orientation so as to drain well & quickly when taking on water.....boy, if I'm wrong about this, please shoot me...I can remember checking the orientation from inside the boat....to insure the drain was in correctly....there is an all-important hole to facilitate the
drainage while moving....

If you are refering ot the 1" rubber drain plug positioned about 1" above the waterline that "drains" the cockpit, it has to be inserted from inside or else it will prevent you from mounting the rudder. I wanted to install a flapper over the outside of mine so I could maybe leave it out on hte mooring without having a lot of water flow IN, but found that there wasn't room between the transom and the rudder and it would prevent the lower pintle from being inserted into the lower gudgeon.

The self-bailer (sorry don't have a picture) has a plug on the inside, but you can't really reach the outside with boat in water.

Thanks for all the input. Very valid point about interference with the rudder if mounted on the outside. Thanks again!
