Rockyglen, I do it ...

I fly an asym on our 356 and it seems not to be a problem. I keep the vang tight if the main is out. But, I do have a toping lift which helps if the main is furled and I tighten it down as a extra concern. Of course we are in the Long Island Sound which is like a lake most of the time.

Hi Rockyglen

Just wanted to help calm any fears of flying an asymmetrical sail such as the APC or UPS on a boat with a B&R Rig. We have been supplying these sails to Hunter owners for many years, and I personally have not heard of any B&R rigs coming down from flying one of these sails. The B&R rig is designed to be used without a backstay because of the swept back spreaders. Lars Bergstrom (Rest his soul) designed these rigs to withstand alot more abuse than a standard rig with a backstay. And I'm sure if there were any real fears or substantiated mishaps, Hunter would abandon these rigs. Most rig failures on cruising boat, no matter what kind of rig, are usually the result of improper tuning or lack of maintenance.

Bob R,

Bob, Did you state that a Hunter dealer recommended against a gennaker because of concern that a B&R rig wouldn't handle it? Sheesh! You ought to call Hunter and talk to them about this. I suspect that the guys in Alachua will agree that your "dealer" probably ought to be looking for another line of work. And the "friend" who claims to have seen a Hunter dismasted flying a chute in moderate wind? Double sheesh! You might want to start looking for new friends. Bottom line: you'll shred the sail long before you endanger the rig.
