Does anyone out there have experience with an automatic mainsail packing system like Dolyle Stackpack vs Mack Pack? I have a full batton mail and would like an easier way to stow it. I don't want to throw the big money at an in boom reefing system. I was wondering if these stacking systems work well and which one is better. Also is there another system out there I don't know about. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I love mine

Dene, I have a B321 with what (I believe) they call a Doyle "Light Pack". The Doyle "Stack Pack" is actually attached to the mainsail and pulls up tight against the sail when it's hoisted, but mine is more like a cradle-type system. It only serves to catch the sail when its lowered, like a lazy-jack system except it also serves as the cover. Anyway, I love it! It makes it so easy to single- or short-hand, and you still get the performance of a non-furling main. One thing you want to do, though, is to make sure to have a way to lower the system when under sail. You don't absolutely need this, but I always lower it and furl the "cover" against the boom if I'm going to be out for awhile. It also helps in that the lazy-jack lines don't interfere with sail trim or chafe against the sail. You'll also want to have the proper sail slugs/slides, and make sure to keep the track lubed up with something like MacLube. You'd be surprised how much having the proper slugs/slides makes a difference, too! I know UK Sails makes something they call a "Lazy Cradle" which is what you are looking for (check their website), and I think Sailrite.com might make a kit as well. Really you could probably get any canvas shop or sailmaker to make you one if you can find someone that has one and make up some drawings to suit your boat. Good luck! Tim

Lazy Cradle

UK Lazy Cradle, similar to stackpack and Mack pack. Price less than Doyle, a bit more than Mack. Put one on my 336 last season, works well, no need to tie sail to boom while reefed, sail lays in the trough. Have had no water problems with my set up.

Stack Pack

I've had the UK Stack Pack for 3 years. Makes Sail handling easy. I highly recommend the system. I also have a full batten main on my 1987 37'Legend. Looking to install a strong track system to raise an lower sail.
