Does any one have any information on Doyle sails? My wife and I are consedering buying there "Stack Pack" system wich consists of a new main, "lazy jacks", and a sail cover. The problem is I'm not sure on there quality. We sail in the San Fransisco bay. We are also looking at Pinapple and Quantum.

Quantum

I ordered a new 155 Genoa for my C-27 at the Strictly Sail Show at Chicago (late Jan, early Feb) and still have not gotten the sail. I suspect that it is the Racine, WI loft that is to blame. Salesperson said if I paid in full it would move my order ahead of the ones who just left deposits. At that rate someone who left a deposit would never get the sail. Talked to the sales person several times last week all ending with I will ship on Fri and get you a tracking number" I have not heard from them since. Personal feeling right now with Quantum Sails is "buyer beware"

Doyle

Doyle is "top shelf" and should satisfy you very well. The "Stack Pack" system is used in quite a few charter fleets and seems to work well and hold up to hard use. Personally feel it's better than "Dutchman" system that cuts holes in sail and sailcover, like on my boat!

Doyle is top quality

in our experience. But living in Oakland, you surely have a choice of quality local lofts. Having a sailmaker you trust and talk to while specifying and using your sails through their life is a big value added - I recommend that you interview the sailmakers in your local lofts to help in your decision. Quantum in SF

We had an extremely positive experience with the Quantum folks here in the San Francisco area. Jocelyn Nash came to the boat and measured every little detail for both the jib and main. She discussed where the foot of the jib would be and how the lead of the sheets would make more use of the genoa track versus the original sails from Hunter. She also made sure our main would hoist the boom higher so it wouldn't rub on the dodger or hit me in the head (I'm 6'1"). The sails were perfect when they arrived. Joceyln also installed them. We like the cut, the batten design (3/4 length). She also made sure the reefing eyes reach the hooks with out having to remove the lower slugs like we did before. All in all, an excellent experience with Quantum and the personal attention was well worth it. We went with the Dutchman system that seems fine for us.

Doyle's quality and support are superb! we replaced our stock sails with new Dooyle sails 3 years ago and have been very pleased-much better performance and they;ve held up very well.

I ended up buying from Quantum

I bought a new mainsail at the Newport, RI show last Fall (September). I was very comfortable with the Quantum people (Bristol, RI) after getting 5 quotes from various lofts. They were not the cheapest, but far from the most expensive. Doyle was comparable (only slightly more expensive). Quantum required 50% up front with the order. The sail was ready within 2 weeks. I didn't use it, so they stored the new sail and my old main for the winter. They will also help me bend it on this Spring. So far, very pleased.

How does UK compare?

Hello, How does UK compare to Doyle and Quantum? Any comments on Airforce sails? This is not for racing, but for day sails, and overnight trips in the Long Island sound. Thanks, Barry

We bought North Sails

We shopped prices for a mainsail and 150% genoa at the Philly boat show and got a quote from Doyle, North Sails, and Sails Direct. Doyle emphasized their quality, and their price was significantly higher for our 27' Starwind. We wanted dacron sails for day sailing. I would have been very comfortable buying from them. However, North followed up with a phone call within a week. I had been reviewing their materials and was leaning their way because price was less for what I perceived to be comparable quality. Ron LaNeve from their Manasquan loft sold these sails to us and actually recommended a less expensive option in the material based on our sailing needs, after I indicated that I was willing to spend more for the more expensive material. I was impressed that he wasn't trying to "oversell" me when he could have. He personally climbed all over my boat in the snow to get exact measurements and spent a lot of time on the phone discussing the product. We ordered the sails the first week in February and they were ready for us in the second week of March. I'd say that was very good service. So far they look great, but we haven't bent them yet! I'm not sure I understand the difference between the brand name North sails and the Sails Direct brand which supposedly uses the North sails material but at far less price. Is it because they are not custom fit, but made based on the stated IPJE dimensions?

Hey Brandon,

You may not know it, but Doyle Sails is one of the sponsors of this website, and they regularly host a very cool guest forum.

We bought the stack pack

We put a Doyle stack pack on our Hunter 40.5 a year ago and couldn't be happier. Boat originally had Dutchman system, which we didn't like because of the lazy jacks running through the sail and the sail cover is a real pain. The stack pack is easy to use and looks great even under sail. My husband is a racer (not on our boat, but on "racers") and he is extremely pleased with the mainsail shape of the Doyle.
