Truely downwind, I have had it up all the way but that will depend on the angle of going downwind. Do this by feel and be safe is all I can say as many will tell you what they think is the absolute truth. Better safe than sorry

On my 26, I usually have the board all the way up downwind. And I usually never sail directly downwind, unless I break out the whisker pole for the jib. If room allows, I will jibe back and forth downwind to get the best boat speed, and keep the jib pulling. The extra speed will more than compensate for the extra distance sailed, and you don't have to worry as much about an accidental jibe.

Downwind I sail with the board all the way up on my 23.5. The board doesn't stop you from capsizing, it gives lateral resistance for upwind sailing.
