Downtime aboard, what do you do?

Geez, I guess my signature should include: I HAVE a Rocna. 40+ meant 40 steady plus much heavier gusts beyond 50 kts!!! And I KNOW how to anchor, I do it weekly. As I've written many times in most anchor questions by linking to an "Anchoring Systems" topic I started years ago, my system is designed for 42 knots. This situation far exceeded that, which is why I dragged in an anchorage that I have been using almost weekly for 17 years. Stuff happens, I survived by planning ahead.

Perhaps your 'down' time would be better spent practicing anchoring? We had that several times this morning. Rain, too. You might want to consider a Rocna.
