PHRF Rules.....

.....do not allow 2 headsails to fly together unless you are going through a headsail change. Flying a jib and a spinnaker together is leagal because a spinnaker is not a headsail. Flying a sail like a tallboy off a babystay and a headsail is also legal because again a tallboy is not a headsail. A headsail is defined as a sail who's luff is attached to the headstay. Certain races may have their rules modified to allow double headsails, but that must be written into the sailing instructions.

Capt Jim,

You are absolutely right about the adjustable tack line and eased halyard. Rocking the Akite to weather is the right thing to do. The problem is that the sail now must be watched and trimmed with great care. Cruising sailors are not going to pay that close attention to sail trim and as a result the sail will tend to collapse much more easily or risk an accidental jibe.

Alan, true! but some of us consider it fun!!!!

rotating the sail to weather does make it a lot touchier to control. helmsperson has to pay a lot more attention to driving to keep it in the window of optimum apparent wind angle. but my wife and i consider it to be a lot more fun than just sitting there and going slow. hold over, i guess, from our days of racing the boat heavily. Which is an O'Day 30cb btw.

ADVANTAGES: YOU CAN FURL THE SAIL ACCORDING TO WIND STRENGTH. WE HAD WIND UP TO 35 KNOTS. NO WORRY ABOUT JIBING. WE CAN SAIL DOWNWIND 20 DEGREE OFF EACH DIRECTION. NO MAIN, NO PREVENTER, ONE PERSON EASILY CAN HANDLE THE SAILS AT NIGHT, EASY TO SLEEP AT NIGHT WITHOUT THE MAIN FLOPPING BACK AND FORTH. THE BOAT,BEN. O-390 PERFORMED VERY WELL WITH AUTO6000,

...and agree with what you say. I think, though that many cruisers don't think of sail trim as fun.....to me sail trim is the name of the game.

Downwind

My favourite approach to my least favourite sail position is wing on wing with the vang clamping the main to a gunwhale and the genaker out the other side.
