We mostly want to cruise on a boat in the 36-40' range. We also like to race double handed. In the past we ride on other peoples boats. Now we want our own to play on. Any suggestions as to what we might consider? We are looking to be as competitive a possible when we race but want some comforts of home below. Thanks

Look for 1990-94 Hunter 35.5 - Alan and others will attest to the racing performance and I can attest to the cruising comfort for a couple.

Your deccription and requirements are brief and budget not dpecified but I have looked at this boat several times and this would be my choice. Very fast and confortable inside. Used 2000 and up models are available for around 225K. Speed potential could probably not be fully exploited by 2 persons but you might have other friends over for races.

Double Handed

My wife and I sailed and raced our '87 35 Hunter for 12 years. Most races were with just the two of us. We almost never lost a race. This boat was also a great crusing boat.

Claude is right and wrong

The 395 is a fast boat and has accommodations, but to double hand this boat in a race??!! you'll get run over. It is a very competitive fleet so you will need a seasoned knowledgeable crew if you're going to finish in the money. My suggestion would be to look for a boat that has a handicap that it sails to well and then turn it into a speed merchant. That's what I did. It took a little time to learn the ropes and get it dialed in, but I'll put my boat up against almost any other and come out on top. (Hunter 35.5 modified)

Spinnakers?

Will you be double handing with a spinnaker? If so, an asymetric spinnaker is going to be helpful. Lots of options here. I can tell you that a 395 double handed is not for the faint of heart:) Maybe a J105? Or a J120 if you have that kind of budget? Or the new Ben 10 meter? Could also do a big catalina (or similar) with a cruising chute. C&C 115? Maybe crew on a few boats in this size and buy the capt a case of beer to chat about it? B
