Hi all,

Last night we had this catamaran moor behind us. Unusual looking masts and having two really put them into my special file.

Looks like a Chris White Atlantic mast foiler. Very easy boat to sail, basically two roller furling jib-like sails. The masts are rotating foils that can actually lift the boat all by themselves.

They have already left but another cruiser mentioned that it was 46 feet and could do 16-18 kt to weather.

Atlantic cats are the me-ow! One other cool feature they have is the cockpit foreward the saloon where the lines and winches are located. Sailing them is like being on a big beach cat. Lots of other cats copied that innovation. Believe the mast foiler is a 47 and they were being made in Chile.

I guess that is technically a schooner....

Schooner Cat?

Ketch rig.
I'm pretty sure that's a schooner since the masts are the same height.
Wouldn't it be easier to have one mast with a furling main and furling jib? Less weight aloft. Make the main on a boom furler with lots of roach or a flat top and you'd get even better performance.
This boat is cool and different, looks easy to sail, but probably wouldn't keep up with a modern sloop rigged cat.

More in the mold of the ketch-rigged sharpies where the masts were much less loaded. The MastFoil is carbon fiber. The whole concept is to eliminate the single large catamaran mainsail that is cumbersome and puts too much weight aloft. White told me that the boat actually sails pretty well with no sails. He said you can rotate the mastfoil and back the boat. His hulls are very slippery, not like the fat cruiser cats.

That is a cool picture. Is there an alternative con. station? That looks like it would be nasty when the weather is rough and your a punching through chop.

I thought that if the mast were the same height or the rear mast was taller, it was a schooner.
No, that is an internet oversimplification. Lots of forgotten sailboats were built with two identical masts, sail power evenly divided, and were known as ketch rigged. See the sharpie., that was a great example. Pickup truck of the sea. Schooners had their mainsail aft and on or just behind the CLR, giving them big sailpower with the ability to put up lots more power forward.

Oh yeah:
Oh man... I would never be able to go to work if I owned one of those. That is the sexiest thing I've ever seen (don't tell my wife)

I'm seriously going to dream about this boat all night.

Thanks... I forgot about the aft position of the mizzen mast... now that you mentioned it, I do remember reading that.
