OK, I've worked up the courage to ask. In Maine Sail's schematic using 2 boat switches, http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/image/138239229.jpg,
instead of running the wire from post 2 to the starter, can I run it from post 2 to the "on" post with the same effect? It would be a much shorter run and I would not have another lug on the starter.

Yes so long as it is on the starter side of the switch, it is the same thing. I only drew it that way because folks seemed to grasp the concept/path easier..

However pleased I am with the answer, I'm ashamed to say that I had to stare at the drawing for an inordinate length of time before coming to that conclusion. Thanks, Maine.
