Lessons learned - don't try to motor in front of a ferry. Anyone ever seen this before? It looks like the guy speeds up to try to cut in front of the ferry. That is nuts! Hope they didn't get hurt too bad.

Looked intentional to me.
. He seemed to purposely steer in that direction to intentionally get hit broadside. The only other excuse might be a mechanical failure. I find it hard to believe that even the dumbest novice would steer into an oncoming ship by mistake. So we have to wonder if it might be a scam to sue the ferry or collect insurance. I'd sure like to know the whole story. .

Perhaps the sailboat has a tiller and the person in charge panicked and moved the tiller "away from" the ferry, which of course resulted in the sailboat turning into the ferry.

with Bob. Looks like a hard turn to port was mistaken for a hard turn to starbord. But why be that close to begin with?

More than Dumb
We had a situation up here about three years ago where a guy in a Tollycraft passed a B.C. Ferry and then cut right in front of it and was run down. His estranged wife was on board and it was judged to be a suicide. Sad story. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust H37.5

Lack of experience maybe?
I watch and watch and watch. For the life of me, I think this is more or a lack of experience event. Not having all the details, it is very hard to accertain what really happened. Maybe the guy "thought" that since he was a sailboat, he was suppose to maintain his course and the "powered" vessel should have moved. Then when he realized the ferry wasn't moving, he attemped to turn. Again, lack of experinence of his boat might have caused him to turn the worng way. I don't think the kid on the bow had any clue what was happening. But it does look like a passenger on the aft starboard quarter was preparing to jump. Bad, real bad. I'm glad that I always give way to any vessel approaching me.

the wooden boat forum. Someone that actually knew the circumstances filled in the blanks. The sailing vessel had gone aground and was attempting to power off and succeeded but didn't respond quickly enough to regain controll of the boat and thus crossed the bow of the ferry. The boat was returned to service.
